Vatican Cover-up

The Vatican has refused to open its files after accusations that it colluded with the Nazis during World War II. Simon Samuels, Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Paris, an organisation which specialises in tracking down Nazi war criminals, recently approached the Pope about the matter. The Pope did not reply.

He then approached the Secretary-General of the Vatican Committee on Relations with Judaism, "Monsignor" Rémy Hoechman, but he refused to comply, saying it was out of the question.

In July 1997 a US Treasury document based on intelligence information was published. It accused the Vatican of keeping tons of Holocaust gold on behalf of the fascist Croatian régime, the Ustashi. The Vatican said that the claims were untrue and that the documents upon which the report was based were not sufficiently sourced.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has claimed that the Vatican set up 22 committees after the War to help Nazi war criminals to escape. These war criminals were issued with Red Cross passports. The Centre stated that a network of monasteries in Europe was used to hide war criminals waiting to go abroad. Gold taken by the Ustashi from their victims in Yugoslavia was used to finance the whole operation.
