The Presbytery of Ulster has opened another new church - the second so far this year - this time in Belfast. The Thirty-Fifth congregation of the Free Church was officially opened on Saturday, 15th April, for the preaching of the Gospel by the Moderator Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley, M.P. Almost 2,000 people packed the church, ante-rooms and halls for the opening ceremony.

The property was declared "redundant" by the Irish Presbyterian Church and the Cliftonville congregation ceased operations and moved to Glengormley earlier this year. The property come into the hands of a Christian businessman

Now, you are aware that there are different theories of Redemption. All Christians hold that Christ died to redeem, but all Christians do not teach the same redemption. We differ as to the nature of atonement, and as to the design of redemption. For instance, the Arminian holds that Christ, when He died, did not die with an intent to save any particular person; and they teach that Christ's death does not in itself secure, beyond doubt, the salvation of any one man living. They believe that Christ died to make the salvation of all men possible, and that by the doing of something else, any man who pleases may attain unto eternal life; consequently, they are obliged to hold that if man's will would not give way and voluntarily surrender to grace, then Christ's atonement would be unavailing. They hold that there was no particularity and speciality in the death of Christ. Christ died, according to them, as much for Judas in hell as for Peter who mounted to heaven. They believe that for those who are consigned to eternal fire, there was as true and real a redemption made as for those who now stand before the throne of the most High. Now WE believe no such thing. We hold that Christ, when He died, had an object in view, and that object will most assuredly, and beyond a doubt be accomplished. We measure the design of Christ's death by the effect of it. If any one asks us, "What did Christ design to do by His death?" We answer that question by asking him another - "What has Christ done, or what will Christ do by His death?" For we declare that the measure of the effect of Christ's love, is the measure of the design of it. We cannot so belie our reason as to think that the intention of Almighty God could be frustrated, or that the design of so great a thing as the atonement, can by any way whatever, be missed. We hold - we are not afraid to say what we believe - that Christ came into this world with the intention of saving "a multitude which no man can number;" and we believe that as the result of this, every person for whom He died must, beyond the shadow of a doubt, be cleansed from sin, and stand, washed in blood before the Father's throne.

The greatness of Christ's redemption may be measured by the EXTENT OF THE DESIGN OF IT. He gave His life a "ransom for many." We are often told that we limit the atonement of Christ, because we say that Christ has not made a satisfaction for all men, or all men would be saved. Now, our reply to this is, that, on the other hand, our opponents limit it: we do not. The Arminians say, Christ died for all men. Ask them what they mean by it. Did Christ die so as to secure the salvation of all men? They say, "No, certainly not." We ask them the next question - Did Christ die so as to secure

Dr. Ian Paisley, M.P., Moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church, returned to preach in Sixmilecross Evangelistic Hall, where he preached his first sermon 30 years ago.

A capacity congregation listened as he preached from the same passage of scripture on which he based his first sermon.

He was welcomed to the pulpit by Mr. George Watson, in whose home at Gortfin, Sixmilecross, as a teenager, Dr. Paisley had spent some months before going to college for training for the ministry. [4]

Mr. Watson, one of the congregation who had gathered on that Sunday 30 years ago, recalled how, when working in a field on the farm at Gortfin Ian Paisley had "heard God's call" to go and preach the Gospel.

"Since then," he said, "he had been mightily used of the Lord to the salvation of souls. He has seen many won to the Lord, has taken a stand against Apostasy and Modernism and the Lord has blessed him.

"Ulster needs a man like this," he said.

Mr. Watson paid tribute to Dr. Paisley's parents. His father, Rev. J. K. Paisley, had often preached at Gospel meetings in Sixmilecross Evangelistic Hall, and his mother, Mrs. Paisley senior, had often sung.

After prayer led by Rev. K. Elliott, minister of Omagh Free Presbyterian Church, Dr. Paisley addressed the congregation.

He said it was with mixed feelings that he came to preach. When he preached his first sermon in the building there were eight people present. Two of them were now deceased - Mr. Watson's wife, and Mr. Bob Kyle.

Dr. Paisley went on to say how at the age of 16 he went to reside in the home of Mr. Watson. He went to stay for one month, which became six months.

"I was relieving him from the plough," he said. "I learned to handle a couple of horses and a plough on that land.

"It was, as I was harrowing in that ground that I had ploughed and we had sown seed on, that God called me to sow a different kind of seed - the seed of the Word of God. Very clearly God said to me: "I want you to sow the seed of the Gospel." And I am happy that I wasn't disobedient to that Heavenly vision."

He recalled that he went to college in South Wales and Belfast to prepare for the Gospel ministry, and how he became the minister of the church of which he was still the pastor, and where he has been for the past 26 years.

"You know," he continued, "this countryside has a place in my heart not only because I commenced my ministry in this hall, and not only because in this place I was called to be a preacher of Christ, but because my father came from this place and I grew up with the name Sixmilecross in my ears."

He said that he appreciated the tribute that was made to his father and mother.

Dr. Paisley recalled how in the intervening years he had preached throughout the British Isles, "almost having to swim for it in the Liffey after preaching in the open air in Dublin," through France and Spain to the Vatican on two occasions, preaching in almost every state of the United States of America, and twice preaching coast to coast across Canada.

Referring to the establishment of the Free Presbyterian Church of which the 34th congregation had opened in January, in Co. Monaghan, he said that God was blessing especially in the Martyrs Memorial Free Presbyterian Church, where there was now the largest Protestant congregation in the United Kingdom.

"It has been the Lord's doing and it is marvellous in our eyes," he said.


"Let me tell you friends, that I am first and foremost a Protestant preacher of the old time religion, and I am only in politics [5] incidentally because of the tragedy of our country. If our country had been kept firmly anchored to Protestant truth we wouldn't be in the sorry state we are in this evening," he said.

"But because we have left, as a country, our anchorage, and we are on the drift, a prey to the winds of Apostasy, Modernism and Romanism, the bark of Ulster is drifting.

"Please God we will once again see Ulster anchored to the great principles of our Protestant faith; that we'll see this drift stopped and that we'll see us moving in the proper direction with the compass of God's Word and with the controlling power of the Gospel as our main-stay.

"I don't believe that the cause of Protestant truth in this land is lost; I don't believe the last chapter of Protestant liberty as far as Ulster is concerned is written. I believe that the country will be saved, not by political enterprise, but I believe by Divine intervention.

"God has a people in this Province and God is going to deliver Ulster, and I would call you all to contend earnestly for the faith and stand for the truth."

"Let me tell you, friends, Jesus Christ is the best Master any man could serve, and I can bear testimony to the sustaining grace and love of Christ."

After his introductory remarks, Dr. Paisley read from Luke chapter 10, the portion of Scripture he read 30 years ago. He based his sermon on the story of the Good Samaritan.


the salvation of any man in particular? They answer "No." They are obliged to admit this, if they are consistent. They say "No Christ has died that any man may be saved if -" and then follow certain conditions of salvation. No, who is it that limits the death of Christ? Why you. You say that Christ did not die so as to infallibly secure the salvation of anybody. We beg your pardon, when you say we limit Christ's death; we say, "No, my dear sir, it is you that do it." We say Christ so died that He infallibly secured the salvation of a multitude that no man can number, who through Christ's death not only may be saved, but are saved, must be saved, and cannot by any possibility run the hazard of being anything but saved. You are welcome to your atonement; you may keep it. We will never renounce ours for the sake of it.


"As God can send a nation or people no greater blessing than to give them faithful, sincere and upright ministers, so the greatest curse that God can possibly send upon a people in this world, is to give them over to blind, unregenerate, carnal, lukewarm and unskilful guides."

"We cry out against popery, and that very justly; but we are all Papists; at least, I am sure, we are all Arminians by nature; and therefore, no wonder so many naturalmen embrace that scheme."

"God the Father and God the Son entered into a covenant concerning the salvation of the elect from all eternity, wherein God the Father promised, that, if the Son would offer His soul a sacrifice for sin, He should see His seed. God as a reward of Christ's suffering, promised to give the elect faith and repentance: and both these, and every thing else necessary for their everlasting happiness, are infallibly secured to them in this promise . . . Would to God this point of doctrine was considered more, and people were more studious of the covenant of redemption between the Father and the Son! we should not then have so much disputing against the doctrine of election. For my own part, I cannot see how true humbleness of mind can be attained without a knowledge of it; and though I will not say, that everyone who denies election is a bad man, yet I will say, it is a very bad sign redemption is so ordered, that no flesh should glory in the Divine presence; and hence it is, that the pride of man opposes this doctrine, because, according to this doctrine, and no other, 'He that glories, must glory only in the Lord'."

"One reason among many others why I admire the doctrine of election and am convinced that it should have a place in a gospel ministry is that it has a natural tendency to rouse the soul out of its carnal security, and therefore many carnal men cry out against it: whereas universal redemption is a notion sadly adapted to keep the soul in its lethargic sleepy condition, and therefore so many natural men admire and applaud it."

"It is the doctrine of election that mostly presses me to abound in good works. I am made willing to suffer all things for the elect's sake. This makes me preach with cornfort, because I know salvation doth not depend on man's free-will, but the Lord makes them willing in the day of His power, and can make use of me to bring some of His elect home, when and where He pleases."

"I go; I go to a rest prepared: my sun has given light to many, but now it is about to set - no, to rise to the zenith of immortal glory. I have outlived many on earth, but they cannot outlive me in heaven. Many shall outlive me on earth and live when this body is no more, but there - oh, thought divine! - I shall be in a world where time, age, sickness and sorrow are unknown. and thence to the Free Church; the church has been re-named John Knox Memorial Free Presbyterian Church.

The Congregation has a very chequered history, and it originated out of a dispute affecting a Rev. James Bryson. Mr. Bryson and those who sympathised with him withdrew and erected a new church in Donegall Street in 1791; and the church from which they separated became Unitarian.

The fourth minister of the Donegall Street congregation was the Rev. Isaac Nelson, this character denounced the great 1859 as a "Delusion." He eventually retired to become a Nationalist M.P. in Co. Mayo.

The lease of the property expired in 1885 and a new building was erected in Cliftonpark Avenue, Among recent ministers were Rev. A. F. Moody, who became Moderator and Rev. V. Ryan, County Grand Chaplain of Belfast Orangemen.

The chequered history and background obviated the inevitable collapse of the Church. The Ecumenical Movement tried every gimmick to hold on to the people; a coffee bar, a T.V. lounge and a badminton court were arranged. The church closed in February and the congregation dispersed. Visitation work has commenced in the adjacent area carried out by Mr. David Creane and his wife.

The first Sunday Services were well attended and a local congregation and Sunday School is being built up.


When contention comes into a place, it seems to prevent all good. And if religion has been flourishing before, it presently seems to chill and deaden it; and everything that is bad begins to flourish. And in the light of our doctrine, we may plainly see the reason of all this; for contention is directly against that which is the very sum of all that is essential and distinguishing in true Christianity, even a spirit of love and peace. No wonder, therefore, that Christianity cannot flourish in a time of strife and contention among its professors. No wonder that religion and contention cannot live together.

Humility tends also to prevent an ostentatious behaviour. If the truly humble man has any advantage or benefit of any kind, either temporal or spiritual, above his neighbours, he will not affect to make a show of it. If he has greater natural abilities than others, he will not be forward to parade and display them, or be careful that others shall know his superiority in this respect. If he has a remarkable spiritual experience, he will not be solicitous that men should know it for the sake of the honour he may obtain by it; nor does he affect to be esteemed of men as an eminent saint and a faithful servant of heaven; for it is a small thing with him what men may think of him.



Jesus Christ The Way, The Truth and The Life

At no time did the heart of Jesus overflow with a tenderer and a more sovereign love to His disciples than when He said, "Let not your heart be troubled." They were troubled by many things, and Jesus said, "Ye believe in God, believe also in Me." Such words of confiding tenderness were never whispered in this cold world before. And when Thomas asked, "How can we know the way?" Christ answered. "I am the way, the truth and the life." (John 14: 6).

CHRIST IS THE WAY. The whole Bible bears witness that by nature we have no way to the Father. We are by nature full of sin, and God is by nature infinitely holy. Just as a sensitive plant, by its very nature, shrinks away from the touch of a human hand, so God by His very nature shrinks away from the touch of sin.

Jesus was grieved that we were shut out from the presence of God, where there is fullness of joy. But how did He open the way? Did He pull aside the veil, that we might steal in secretly and easily? No, He offered Himself an offering to satisfy divine justice and reconcile us to God.

Christ says to you, "I am the way." It is a full, free and open way, and it is a way for sinners. Why wait a moment longer? There was once a partition wall between you and God; but Christ has cast it down.

CHRIST IS THE TRUTH. The whole Bible and the whole of experience bears witness that by nature we are ignorant of the truth. An unconverted man may know many truths, mathematical and everyday, but he cannot be said to know the TRUTH, for Christ is the truth.

Christ may be called the keystone of the arch of truth. Take away the keystone and the arch becomes a heap of rubbish, with stones that are fallen, smothered, without order. Just so, without Christ the truths may be there, but they are fallen, without order or coherence.

Christ may be called the sun of the system of truth. Take away the sun from our solar system and every planet would rush into confusion, with orb dashing against orb in endless perplexity. Just so, take Christ away, and the same truths may be in the mind, but they are all conflicting and jarring in inextricable mazes; for "the way of the wicked is as darkness; they know not at what they stumble," (Proverbs 4: 19).

But let Christ be revealed to an unconverted soul, and now he knows the truth with regard to himself. Did the Son of God really leave the bosom of the Father to bear wrath in our stead? Then I must be under wrath. Did God freely give up His Son to the death for us all? Then if I believe in [11] Jesus, there is no condemnation to me. God is my Father and God is love.

CHRIST IS THE LIFE. The whole Bible bears witness that by nature, we are dead in trespasses and sins - as unable to walk holily in the world as a dead man is unable to rise, (See Ezekiel 37 : 1-10). Is your soul like a dead limb - cold, stiff, motionless, and full of corruption? Cleave to Christ; be joined to Him by faith, and you shall be one spirit; you shall be made warm, and vigorous and full of activity in God's presence.

Look back over your life. See how you have walked according to the course of this world, like a man swimming with the stream never against the current. Look into your heart and see how it has turned against the commandments. You find it impossible to keep your eyes from unlawful desires, your heart from malice and envy, your tongue from words of anger or gossiping or bitterness. To try to keep from these things is like trying to raise the dead. Do you not find a struggle within yourself? How plain that you are dead. "Marvel not that I say unto you, you must be born again."

Be joined to Christ and you will be one spirit. You will find it true that Christ is the life; your life will be hid with Christ in God. You will say, "I live! " For Christ is the way, the truth and the life.

Remembrance of Daily Duties

1. Return solemn thanks for the night's mercies. Beg assistance for the day.

2. In all acts of devotion, let me first collect my thoughts. Let me have them at their bent before I begin. Speak directly to God. Give way to no external, nor internal diversion.

3. Let me read the Scriptures - (a) with a serious, practical view; and (b) with comment.

4. Never trifle with a book with which I have no present concern. And, in reading any book (a) let me reflect what I may learn by it, and (b) beg Divine assistance.

5. Never lose one minute of time.

6. Watch against undue expenditure, that I may have the more to spend for God.

7. When abroad, let me be desirous of doing and receiving good. Let me have some subject of contemplation, in readiness to occupy my thoughts as I walk along. Let me render myself agreeable and useful to all, by tender, compassionate, friendly behaviour. Let me avoid trifling, impertinent stories. Imprudence is sin.

8. Use great moderation in meals. Watch against hypocrisy in thanksgiving.

9. Let me never delay a duty, unless I can prove that another time is more fit or that some more important duty stands in the way of it.

A Sermon by Ian R. K. Paisley, D.D.

"I want to preach on a subject 'How to get out of prison.' I'm sure some of you are saying, 'Well I can see absolutely no relationship between your subject, preacher, and the passage of scripture that you read.' Well. maybe as we go on you will receive a little enlightenment, I trust you shall. Someone has said that strong walls and bars do not the prison make. A man may be behind bars, behind great walls, incarcerated with bars and chains and locks, and (with a trusty warder keeping an attentive eye upon his movements, but that man may be enjoying more freedom and more liberty and more victory than a man walking out in the public highway. I know that imprisonment can be judicial. A man can be apprehended, indicted, tried, found guilty and put in prison - judicial imprisonment. But there is an imprisonment that is not judicial, but that is physical. A man with some life-ending disease working in his body, and every day he's in the company of the grim warder of death. He knows that his days are numbered and because of the fear of death, to use the scriptural term, he is all his life subject to bondage. I have a word for such a person tonight. A person that is imprisoned physically.

"Then imprisonment can be mental. A great gloom can settle down upon the mind, a false impression can harry and harass the soul. The man can be worried almost out of his wits by the depression and oppression of the enemy. Do you remember what David said? 'Why go I a mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?' Imprisonment can be mental. Thank God I've a word . tonight for the man who is mentally imprisoned.

"Imprisonment can be moral. The drunkard knows the chains of alcoholism, his life is bounded by a prison, and for him there is no escape, he takes the pledge but his life is a life of broken pledges, a life punctuated by his own terrible capitulation to the curse of alcohol, he's morally imprisoned. The gambler knows what moral imprisonment is, a habit has caught him and captured him and brought him to the place of imprisonment. The fever is upon him, he cannot make his way home with his pay packet, he must hasten to the gambling den, and there, the money got by the sweat of his brow, must be squandered before the idolatry of this plague of gambling that has captivated his heart. Others are moral prisoners to their passions and to uncleanness, and they long to escape from the lusts of the flesh, but there is absolutely no escape for them, they are tied, they are bound, they are chained. they are incarcerated with their own lusts and think only of themselves and nothing moral. Thank God I've a word tonight for the person who is morally a prisoner.

"Imprisonment can be circumstantial. How many are prisoners to their circumstances? Ah, there's a mother and she's a wall around her life, there are circumstances [13] in her family and those circumstances have forged a dying chain, and that poor mother because of circumstances is a prisoner, a real and terrible prisoner. How many a man, how many a woman because of death, because of adversity, because of the failure of friends, because they trusted in man and man failed them, how many men and women are prisoners because of their own circumstances? Thank God I've a message for you tonight.

"And then of course all men are imprisoned in a spiritual sense. We are all by nature in spiritual bondage, we are sons of Ishmael, we belong to Sinai's race and upon us is the bondage and imprisonment of the law, and we are under bondage to sin. I come tonight to this pulpit to declare to every prisoner a great deliverance, and I'm coming now to my text, and if you have your Testament would you open it at chapter thirteen of Luke and at verse eleven, and here we have a woman and she was physically a prisoner, and she was mentally a prisoner and she was by circumstances a prisoner, and she was spiritually a prisoner, and yet, praise God, she got out of her prison and escaped from her bondage. I want to talk to you about five things concerning Christ. What a Christ we have! FIRST, notice the compassion of Christ. SECONDLY, notice the command of Christ, His glorious command. THIRDLY, notice contact with Christ; He laid His hands on her. May the blessed Saviour lay His hands on you tonight. When Jesus touches souls, those souls know liberty. Then you will notice the conflict as the result of Christ's ministry. And, my, when Christ is preached there will be conflict and opposition. But then I want you to notice the conquest, the adversaries are ashamed and the words of glory and praise ring off the rafters of the synagogue because Jesus has done all things well.

"I want you to look first of all at the COMPASSION OF CHRIST. Look at that verse 'And when Jesus saw her.' The Lord Jesus Christ was preaching to a packed synagogue, no one came to Him to tell Him about this woman. I want you to notice that His compassion didn't depend upon her prayers, she didn't come and pray and say 'Oh, Christ heal me.' She never prayed. The compassion of Christ didn't depend on anybody else's prayers. Her friends didn't gather around the Lord and say 'Lord, heal this friend of ours.' His compassion depended upon Himself, and I'm glad to tell you tonight that even although you have never uttered a prayer for yourself, even although none of us has ever uttered a prayer for you, Jesus Christ has compassion upon you. That dear man sitting in this meeting, and although he knows that in his body there is a life-ending disease, and the physicians have told him that his days are numbered, and he's walking around with the warder of death, Jesus has compassion on you. When no one else cares, when no one else loves, when no one else thinks when no one else has any time for you, Jesus Christ thinks upon you. Wonderful Jesus! That man sitting in this meeting, that woman sitting somewhere in these pews or down these aisles, tucked away in this great congregation tonight, carrying a lonely burden, a prisoner because of circumstances, a prisoner because of the situation in the home, in the family, in the business, Jesus knows all about it, He understands your heartbreak and your heartache, Jesus has compassion. That man, that [14] woman somewhere in this meeting who's bound up morally, and you've a page in life's history that is as black as the midnight of hell, and you bow your head and you say 'My God if I could only break the chains, but I've tried it so often and I've gone back to deeper degradation and depravity.' Let me tell you tonight, Jesus has compassion upon you. 'He saw her.' When Jesus sets His eye upon you, He reads all about you. He saw that woman's powerlessness, her plight, she was bent double, her eyes were always toward the ground. Isn't that like you, poor imprisoned sinner, your eyes are always toward the ground, for dust you art, and to dust you shall return. He saw her plight, He saw her powerlessness, she couldn't lift herself, she was powerless, and you're a powerless sinner, you can't lift yourself. You have tried it, haven't you, and you failed. How many times poor drunkard have you said 'No more booze for me,' but the next Saturday you were back in the boozer. How many times gambler did you say 'Never again' but you were back at it harder and worse than ever. How many times my friend, revelling in your lust, have you tried to break from the fetters of your own uncleanness, but the fetters bind you harder, and drag you down to deeper pollution and degradation. Christ sees your powerlessness. Christ saw her persecution, the devil was at her, and the evil monster of perdition. The prince of hell is at you tonight and he's at you, friend, this evening to bind you and hold you to imprison you. Christ has compassion. His compassion led to His command, look at it. When He saw her He called her to Him. He didn't call her to the church, He didn't call her to the Mosaic law, He didn't call her to the ritual of the synagogue, He didn't call her to the ruler of the synagogue, He called her to himself. That's the way people are saved. They touch Jesus, Hallelujah! When you touch Jesus you'll be saved all right. Could I say something tonight in this meeting, that when He uttered His command it was authoritative. You know He didn't say - I want you to notice this carefully - He didn't say 'Woman be thou loosed from thine infirmity.' He said 'Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.' Because when the command leaves the lips of Jesus, the blessed work is done. I was on my knees the other night with a dear struggling soul, and I said 'The Blood of Christ takes away your sin, but the Word of Christ will settle all your doubts.' And that soul saw it, and they turned to me and said 'Mr. Paisley, it's just the Word of God.' I said 'That's it, just the Word of Jesus.' Oh that you might hear His Word tonight, the authoritative, life-giving, emancipating, soul-saving, sin-pardoning Word of God. If you hear that word tonight, the fetters will go, the chains will go and your soul will be free. You know that command drew the woman to Christ, wherever she was she was drawn to Jesus. 'Draw me,' said the spouse in the song, 'and I shall run after Thee.' Thank God there are hundreds of Christians can sing Doddrige's hymn 'He drew me and I followed on, charmed to confess the voice divine.'

"Look, my friend, at the contact. Isn't this lovely? 'He put His hands on her.' The touch of the nail-pierced hand, that's what you need tonight. How to get out of your prison mentally, and morally, and physically and circumstantially, how to get out of your prison, my friend, feel the touch of Jesus, [15] let Him touch you. You say 'But, Mr. Paisley I'm a dying man, my body's finished, my health's gone.' My friend, He can deliver those who through fear of death were all their life-time subject to bondage, you can be delivered tonight. And I'll tell you what is more, if it's His will, He can heal your body, and if it's not His will to heal you, He'll give you victory in the hour of death, and land you safe on the glory shore. I was talking to a man the other day, and the doctor told him he was doomed, and he says 'Take it easy.' He says 'I'll not take it easy, I'll enjoy all that's left of life for I'm going to heaven anyway, so I'm going to enjoy the last few minutes.' Hallelujah, that's the right spirit, yes. I heard about a man and the doctor said his heart was gone, and he went home and read the Psalm 'The Lord is the strength of my heart.' He says 'I'll be all right, I've got the Lord's strength.' That man lived, after that, nearly thirty years, and the old doctor was wrong. The Lord doesn't want us to be going round under imprisonment. How many people here have oppressions and depressions? How many people here are carrying a burden that is too heavy to bear? Jesus can lift your burden tonight, let Him lift your burden for you, His shoulders are broad enough, His shoulders are strong enough, His shoulders are powerful enough to carry all the burdens, for it says 'The government is upon His shoulder.'

"Contact with Jesus. Please God you'll touch Him tonight. Oh that you might touch my Lord. It's wonderful to touch Jesus. I have felt the hands of Jesus upon me, not in a physical, but in a spiritual way. They were bleeding hands, but Hallelujah, they were blessing hands. Feel His hands tonight, you need Him, don't you? In life's struggle brother, you need Him, in life's conflict friend you need Him, in life's dark hours of temptations, and in the shadows of death you need Jesus. He wants to touch you tonight, will you let Him touch you? Get out of your prison tonight, let Jesus touch you. I want you to notice that when this happened there was conflict. Oh, the devil was really mad, and when God saves men and women, there's opposition, and people don't like a soul-saving ministry. When I was a young boy I thought that if I went out and won souls, everybody would say I was a great fellow, and I used to say 'If I could only win souls, people would think that I was a great person.' And when God helped me to win men, I never knew the opposition of the devil until that day. My friend, there's nothing popular about winning souls for the Lord. There'll be a row, and you know who'll fight you the most? The Ruler of the synagogue; the Alfie Martins and the Eric Gallahers and the rest of the crowd, my, they'll not like it. Thank God for an old-fashioned, soul-saving ministry. I remember going to preach once in the Isle of Man, in a Methodist church. There a great old saint of God was the minister and he asked me to go and hold a mission, and by the time I got to hold the mission, he was shifted away to Manchester. When I arrived there was an old modernist in charge. Of course I preached so hot he never came near the services, and his assistant smoked outside the prayer meetings while I got the fire, and we had some meetings I'm telling you. If ever this preacher laid it out hot and well, I did it, and people [16] got saved and I brought them down the aisles, I remember one Sunday night we had fourteen souls in the gospel net, and the old circuit steward ran up the aisle, and he said 'I've been here forty years and they never did this before,' and I said 'You ain't seen anything yet, take your seat sir.' Yes we had a good time, and when we got them saved we got them separated, My, that mission didn't do that apostate church any good, they gave us the heat and the light and the pews, and we got them saved and got them separated, it was a good job. I want to tell you something, friend, there'll be opposition when men are saved. You get saved tonight, and the devil will be after you. But thank God, Jesus is the conqueror. Did you read the end of it - "the adversaries were put to shame, and all men glorified God." That's what happens when revival comes, the adversaries hang their head in shame, they can't answer the mighty saving work of Christ. What prison are you in tonight? A spiritual one, a moral one, are you a prisoner of circumstances? Oh, let me tell you, Jesus will set you free right now. Will you make contact with my Saviour, He's calling to you, He sees all the past, He saw that woman's eighteen years of bondage, every one of them, He saw all her dark days and all her unhappiness, and yet, my friend, He called her to Himself. We would say "Lord Jesus, call men to yourself tonight, for Jesus sake." Let's bow our heads: Father in Heaven, as we have preached Thy Word, we have felt Thy help and Thy strength and Thine enduement and Thine enablement, but oh God we confess the poorness of our speech, the weakness of our words, the faultiness of our conviction, the terrible, terrible weakness of our arguments. But, Lord Jesus Thou art sovereign in Thy majesty. Sovereign Christ, call sinners to Thyself tonight, for Jesus' sake. Amen.


I became very concerned about the absentees and decided to check up on some of them. This is what I found out:

The O. KASIONAL family said they'll probably be back sometime next month. Once a month is average for them.

MR. and MRS. FAINT HEARTED have given up again. They can't realise that it takes enthusiasm and interest on everyone's part to maintain the status of "faithful steward."

The PLES R. SEEKERS were at the beach and got home just a little too late to come.

MRS. N. E. EXCUSE didn't have a thing clean to wear. I saw her on the way to work the next day.

The SPINELESS SISTERS had someone to drop in at 9 o'clock. They just couldn't tell them that they were on their way to church.

The WEATHER WATCHERS said the thunder was too loud.

Miss HATTIE GO HOME just had to see her folks. She's out "on her own," 'tis true, but she hadn't been home since last weekend!

MR. and MRS. T. V. ADDICT and children couldn't miss a special television show.

MR. LUKE WARM seems to be unconcerned about his Christian responsibility to be a good steward of his talents.

MR. SPAZ MOTIC just didn't feel like coming.
