86000 New Church Bulding Opened in Armagh


A new chapter in the history of the Free Presbyterian Church began with the opening of a new church at Grove Terrace, Armagh.

Since the first Free Church was formed by the Rev. Dr. Paisley, Moderator of Presbytery, in Crossgar, County Down, in 1951 congregations have formed in all six counties of the Province and in Drum, County Monaghan, where a church has been functioning since 1972.

There are 36 congregations in Ulster and Eire, and the church is looked upon by many as the fastest growing church in Ireland.

Sources of the Free Church are convinced that it is fast outstripping the Methodist Church one of the four main Churches in Ireland in size and income.

The new church in Armagh, which was packed to capacity for the opening service, cost about 86,000 and half of this outlay has been met by the subscriptions of church members.

The Rev. S. B. Cooke, who has ministered to the Armagh congregation since 1967, outlined the history of the city church during the opening service. [2]

He said the Armagh congregation was formed in the autumn of 1965, following a gospel campaign in the city which was conducted by Dr. Paisley.

Early meetings were held in a gospel tent, and they were then given a week to find a new site. A wooden structure was erected on a temporary basis at the Mall, and although efforts were made by some to have it closed, the meetings were held there until a permanent site at Grove Terrace was purchased.

Since then the members have met in a portable hall close to the site of the new building.

In summer, 1972, the site for the new church was cleared and prepared for the building, and planning started later that year.

On March 17, 1973, Dr. Paisley cut the first sod and in August of that year the building contractor, Mr. Desmond Biggerstaff, began the work on the erection of the new church.

Mr. Cooke went on to thank the members for the subscriptions and for their work in preparation for the official opening of the church.

The Rev. John Douglas, clerk of the Free Presbyterian Church, and minister Of Moneyslane Church, who was present at the opening service, issued a statement the previous week saying that the Free Church had congregations in almost all the major towns in Ulster.

He said the church was more widely represented in all parts of the Province than the Methodist Church, which in some areas did not have churches.

"We are a fast growing church with a list of modern new churches in the course of erection at Portadown, Omagh and Magherafelt," he said, adding, that the Free Church's "unashamed defence of traditional Protestant principles" was the reason for its rapid growth.

"My church puts the emphasis on Bible exposition and the teaching of the atonement - justification by faith. This reaffirms the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation and is seen to be in opposition to ecumenism," said Mr. Douglas.

"The ecumenical Churches put their emphasis on ritual and a kind of priesthood and it is evident that many people in the Churches are turning to us for spiritual guidance."

Adam and Eve were Real Life Figures

In the day schools of Ulster our children are being taught that Adam and Eve were not real life figures and that the Genesis narrative is a myth. Many years ago we refuted this blasphemy and we reprint the article in order to help Christian parents to strengthen their children in the infallibility and historicity of the Bible.

"The story of Adam and Eve in the Garden is not a historical or factual narrative, and it serves no Christian interest to pretend that it is," the Bishop of Southwell (Notts.), Dr. F. R. Barry says: "It does not describe an event which happened at the dawn of history, it presents one of the permanent and moral realities of human nature. The author is stating a fundamental truth about man in his relationship to God in the form of a story, dramatic poem or as theologians now say, a myth. Some people might be shocked to hear that Adam and Eve were not real life people." - Northern Whig (February 26th, 1955).

Without producing a shred of evidence in either language, manuscripts, versions or inscriptions which would enable him to persuade a jury of sensible lawyers trained in the laws of evidence that he has even a case fit to be presented before a court for trial, the Bishop of Southwell curtly dismisses Adam and Eve from the field of history with the same air of episcopal authority with which he would sack a rebellious junior curate from his diocese.

The Bishop might be able to rectify "rectors" or victimise "vicars," or even shift such heavy church artillery as "canons," but his episcopal authority or gaiters cannot budge Adam from the page of history.

How does the Bishop know that Adam and Eve did not exist ? He puts forward no evidence. He advances no reasons. He produces no proof, but like another Bishop who has his diocese somewhat nearer the equator, he simply makes a sweeping statement which is expected to be received as infallible. The truth of the matter is that the Bishop does not know, and what is more, in denying the historicity of Adam and Eve, he has told a big lie. [4]

In regard to the historical accuracy of the Old Testament, Prof. Robert Dick Wilson of Princeton, the greatest Old Testament scholar of his day, had this to say. "I maintain, further, that no mere opinion, even of the wisest man now living is sufficient to cast a doubt upon the veracity of documents two or three thousand years old; that opinions and conjectures are not evidence; and that the only evidence by which we can test the reliability of ancient historic documents except so much as is to be acquired from analogy must be derived from other ancient, and, if possible, contemporaneous documents. As to writing, language, form of literature, law, history and religion, the Old Testament stands approved by the evidence of contemporaneous documents of unquestioned veracity and relativity."

The spearhead of Satan's attack has always been directed against the Christ of God, and it can be clearly seen that this effort to get rid of the historical first Adam is really an effort to get rid of Christ, the historical last Adam. A Biblical consideration of this question of Adam's historicity demonstrates the unassailable organic unity of the Bible by bringing into focus the implications Christward, which result in rejecting the historical Adam.

These implications are three in number:


Our Lord Jesus Christ corroborated the Genesis narrative concerning the historical Adam. In Matthew 19: 4, Jesus says: "Have ye not read that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female." In Matthew 19: 5, He says further that God said: "For this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh."

Again, our Lord in mentioning Abel, Luke 11: 51 and Matthew 23: 35, and in confirming the account of his death, establishes beyond doubt that Abel was a historical person. This further confirms Abel's father's historicity.

The Master's own words should come as a sobering rebuke to all who would challenge His authority in such matters: "If I have told ye earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things?" (John 3: 12).


If there is no historical first Adam, then there can be no historical last Adam. To reject the person of the first man, who is of the earth earthly, is to reject the person of the second Man Who is the Lord from heaven. Our Saviour is "the [5] root and offspring of David," but if there was no Adam there could be no David, for David's genealogy is traced back to Adam. Again, Christ is of the seed of Abraham, but if there was no Adam there could be no Abraham, as Abraham's genealogy is traced back to Adam. The genealogy of Christ in Luke is generally accepted as the genealogy of His Virgin Mother, and it is traced back to Adam; but if as the Bishop would have us believe there was no Adam then there was no Mary, and hence no historical Christ.

Bible history, however, has been tested and proved, while the Bishop's statement is supported by not a shred of evidence of any kind and dissolves quickly away like all the other vapours of man's vain imagination.

We affirm and believe, supported by impregnable evidence, that over nineteen hundred years ago a wondrous Person Who was none other than God incarnate among the sons of men walked this planet of ours, and that His genealogy from the human standpoint can be traced back to another man who also traversed this planet of ours. We believe in the person of Adam because we believe in the Person of Christ.


Christianity's doctrines are based on historical facts, and if these be destroyed what shall the righteous do? Dr. J. Gresham Machen points out that two elements are always contained in the Christian message: (i) the narration of the facts, ie, history; (ii) the setting forth of the meaning of the facts, ie, doctrine. "Without these two elements inextricably intertwined," he declares, "there is no Christianity." To the reader of the Bible this is perfectly plain. Keeping in mind this relationship between history and doctrine we discover that portions of Scripture record Adam's act and then expound the consequences of that act on the race of that act. The Cross is a fact of history and the Person Who endured its suffering is a real Person none other than the Christ of God. Will the Bishop deny that? Correspondingly, the Fall is a fact of history and the persons who fell real life figures. How can the Bishop logically deny it?

To deny the actuality of Adam and his fall is to deny the actuality of Christ and His Cross. The Redeeming act of Christ in history and both are facts of real life.

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. . . . For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous" (Romans 5: 12,-19). This chapter makes it clear that the one man referred to as disobedient is

Glide Memorial Methodist  Methodist Church Sponsors National Convention of Prostitutes

We would not have believed it possible when we heard the announcement over the radio of the metropolitan area, so we demanded to see it in print. The Oakland Tribune for June 28, 1974, carried a seven-column article on page 31, with pictures of leading prostitutes carrying picket signs before San Francisco City Hall. "Coyote, too, is the name of the local Organisation of prostitutes, headed by Margo St. James, which sponsored the First National Hookers' Convention, Wednesday evening at Glide Memorial Methodist Church. It was attended by delegates from ASP (Association of Seattle Prostitutes) and PONY (Prostitutes of New York) and featured an address by black activist attorney Flo Kennedy, entertainment by the feminist comedy duo, Harrison and Tyler, and a panel discussion on the decriminalisation of prostitution. The gathering in front of City Hall earlier was, said Miss St. James, to let everyone know about the convention, and to advocate a citation system, similar to traffic tickets, for non-victim crimes such as prostitution." Not only is the Glide Methodist Church in good and regular standing in the United Methodist denomination, but the Methodist Church has its Bishop's headquarters right in the Glide properties in San Francisco. Not long ago the church had provided several thousand dollars out of mission funds of the Glide Foundation (the parent organisation) for the prostitutes to help form a prostitutes' union in San Francisco. What Does Malcolm Muggeridge Believe?

"By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them." This is what Jesus said concerning false prophets. Matt. 7: 15-20. The Dean of British columnists and noted TV personality was one of the main speakers at Billy Graham's recent Congress on Evangelisation at Lausanne, Switzerland. Muggeridge is one of the most stimulating and interesting thinkers and undoubtedly a man of high moral integrity. He has expressed his faith in his book "Jesus Rediscovered," published in 1969 by Doubleday and more recently reprinted by Kenneth Taylor's Tyndale House Publishers, who have given the world "The Living Bible." In this book Muggeridge takes sharp issue with the historic Christian Faith.


Muggeridge writes on page 95 - "To imagine this deity having a son in any particular sense, and this son to have been born of a virgin, and to have lived on earth for thirty years or so as a man, then to have died and to have risen from the dead, is, as far as I am concerned beyond credibility."


Regarding the resurrection of Christ, the Lousanne speaker suggests that perhaps "some body-snatcher looking for jewels and a crown stole the body and then abandoned the body to the vultures." p. 99. He claims that it is not important whether Christ actually rose from the dead. p. 51.


"Christ's mother, Mary, conceived him out of wedlock, but believed, when an inner voice, or angel, told her that he pregnancy was divinely ordained." p. 1.

Basic doctrines of the Faith are totally without significance; Dr. Graham's honoured friend states: "The various dogmas of institutional Christianity like, for instance the doctrine of the Trinity, or of the Immaculate Conception - just do not impinge; I neither believe nor disbelieve them, and feel no inclination to defend or denounce them. I find them perfectly comprehensible, perfectly harmless and as far as I am concerned - totally without significance. Nor does the historicity of the Gospels' account of Christ's birth, life and death worry me at all. If, tomorrow, someone were to unearth another Dead Sea Scroll proving that, in earthly terms, the traditional Christian story just didn't happen that way it wouldn't disturb my attitude towards Christianity at all." p. 71. Mariolatry in the Charismatic Movement

The Roman Catholic publication Marian Fatbers in their April-June 1974 issue have an amazing article on the place of Mary in the lives of a Roman Catholic Charismatic couple. " 'The rosary has become an important part of our daily life,' explains Terry and Joy Collard, an enthusiastic Roman Catholic couple who are active in the Charismatic Renewal Movement in the Church. Their loving devotion to Mary, as the Mother of God and spouse of the Holy Spirit, is best vacolised by their song Mary, on their first record WALK in Love. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, and now living in a Denver suburb, have travelled many miles on their tours to fifteen different states where they have assisted with contemporary Mass liturgies and spoke at Roman Catholic Charismatic prayer meetings. They have been active in the Roman Catholic Charismatic movement since 1969 and have attended the movement's national conventions at Notre Dame, Indiana, the last two years. As a family project Terry and joy make rosaries with their older children to help spread the devotion. They assemble many simple rosaries for the missions and also make rosaries for prisoners, the poor and for people on special request to encourage playing of the rosary as requested by Our Lady at Fatima last December 8 on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Collards made their consecration to Our Lady of Consolation, which means they pledge to give all the graces they receive and merits they earn to Our Blessed Mother to dispense as she desires. This devotion to Mary was encouraged by St. Louis G. de Montfort canonised by Pope Pius XII. The Collards have noticed that the Charismatic movement has been a source of real renewal for many Roman Catholics. A Roman Catholic who really receives the Holy Spirit fully acquires added love for the Mass, an increased devotion in the Divine Presence in the Blessed Sacrament, greater interest in reading and studying the Bible, and renewed and increased devotion to the Blessed Mother, they point out. They both sing at Masses regularly for parishes in the Denver metropolitan area as well as their own parish. They also host a weekly Roman Catholic charismatic prayer group in their home. Joy explains that because of their work in the Roman Catholic Charismatic movement, they have a new and closer relationship to Jesus, but they feel that it is Mary who has led them directly to her Son." [9]

Dr. Paisley hits out at "Quislings"

The clergymen who had peace talks with Provisional IRA chiefs were strongly attacked by the Rev. Dr. Ian Paisley, MP, at the opening service of the new 86,000 Free Presbyterian Church in Armagh.

Speaking on behalf of the Presbytery of the Free Church, Dr. Paisley told the large congregation that the "clerical Quislings" had withdrawn to the sidelines because they wished to conceal proposals they had put to the terrorist leaders, and how far the Government had agreed those terms which brought about "the first stage of surrender to IRA demands and the phoney cease fire."

Dr. Paisley called on the Protestants of Ulster to "repudiate the leadership and treachery of these dishonourable clerics by withdrawing from their ministry and refusing to support them in their plan of treachery."

He told the congregation that there were two ways in which an end to violence could come.

"Firstly," he said, "by the defeat, disarming and destruction of the IRA terrorists.

"Secondly by a series of concessions to the IRA - leading to negotiations between the IRA and the British Government which can only lead to a further betrayal of Ulster loyalists and the long term achievement of the IRA's objective a United Ireland."

The ecumenical clergy, said Dr. Paisley had rejected the first method and were now spearheading the implementation of the second.

He said the Clerk of the General Assembly had stated publicly that there could be no victors in the struggle and by doing so was becoming "a parrot of IRA propaganda."

Dr. Paisley went on: "Behind a welter of false statements they have forged a chain between the Government and the IRA murderers, and then have the blasphemous audacity to cloak the operation by naming it a peace in the name of Christ.


"Their hypocrisy is self evident. When they conduct the funeral of one of the IRA victims they make strong statements of condemnation, but when they collaborate with the IRA they testify that these [10] hellish fiends have a sincere desire for a just peace."

Dr. Paisley said the Presbytery has noted "the silence of Cardinal Conway" to his repeated challenge concerning the Roman Catholic Primate's attitude to the RUC and the Army and his failure to spell out what he thinks conditions of peace should be.

"The Cardinal's objectives and the IRA's objectives are one and the same a Roman Catholic controlled United Ireland," he claimed.

"The Church of Rome is quite happy to support the IRA terrorists and to harvest any results which may come from their reign of terror."

He went on to say that it was no surprise to the Presbytery that the World Council of Churches had had meetings with the IRA.

"The indisputable fact is that the World Council of Churches had been financing similar terrorist organisations in Africa who have been guilty of equally atrocious crimes as the IRA."


Dr. Paisley went on: "The Presbytery also notes that in the official meetings of the so-called peace initiative of the ecumenical churches and the Church Of Rome no prayer has been offered for the forces of the Crown - the RUC and the Army.

"This has been done deliberately, the Presbytery believes, to placate the Republican terrorist faction.

"Christians have an obligation to pray for victory over these terrorist tyrants, for true peace can only come after such victory. Ulster needs to return to the God of her fathers and with our repentance will come his intervention."


Adam (see verse 14). The rejection of the historical Adam therefore carries with it the rejection of Christ's work.

In conclusion, we see that Adam and Eve were real life figures, and in denying their historical actuality the Bishop has told a big lie.

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" (Revelation 21: 8). [11]

The Pentland Rising - Part TWO - THE BEGINNING

Upon Tuesday, November 13th, 1666 Corporal George Deanes and three other soldiers set upon an old man in the clachan of Dalry and demanded the payment of his fines. On the old man's refusing to pay, the forced a large party of his neighbours to go with them and thresh his corn. The field was a certain distance out of the clachan, and four persons, disguised as countrymen, who had been out on the moors all night, met this mournful drove of slaves, compelled by the four soldiers to work for the ruin of their friend. However, chilled to the bone by their night on the hills, and worn out by want of food, they proceeded to the village inn to refresh themselves. Suddenly some people rushed into the room where they were sitting, and told them that the soldiers were about to roast the old man, naked, on his own girdle. This was too much for them to stand, and they repaired immediately to the scene of this gross outrage, and at first merely requested that the captive should be released. On the refusal of the two soldiers who were in the front room, high words were given and taken on both sides, and the other two rushed forth from an adjoining chamber and made at the countrymen with drawn swords. One of the latter, John McLenan of Carscop, drew a pistol and shot the corporal in the body. The pieces of tobacco-pipe with which it was loaded, to the number of ten at least, entered him, and he was so much disturbed that he never appears to have recovered, for we find long afterwards a petition to the Privy Council requesting a pension for him. The other soldiers then laid down their arms, the old man was rescued, and the rebellion was commenced.

And now we must turn to Sir James Turner's memoirs of himself; for, strange to say, this extraordinary man was remarkably fond of literary composition, and wrote, besides the amusing account of his own adventures just mentioned, a large number of essays and short biographies, and a work of war, entitled Pallas Armata. The following are some of the shorter pieces: Magick, Friend Friendship, Imprisonment, Anger, Revenge, Duells, Cruelty, A Defence of some of the Ceremonies of the English Litargie - to wit - Bowing at the Name of Jesus, The frequent repetition of the Lord's Prayer and Good Lord deliver us, Of the Doxologie, Of Surplesses, Rotchets, Cannonicall Coats, etc. From what we know of his character we should expect Anger and Cruelty to be very full [12] and instructive. But what earthly right he had to meddle with ecclesiastical subjects it is hard to see.

Upon the 12th of the month he had received some information concerning Gray's proceedings, but as it was excessively indefinite in its character, he paid no attention to it. On the evening of the 14th, Corporal Deanes was brought into Dumfries, who affirmed stoutly that he had been shot while refusing to sign the Covenant - a story, rendered singularly unlikely by the after conduct of the rebels. Sir James instantly despatched orders to the cessed soldiers either to come to Dumfries or meet him on the way to Dalry, and commanded the thirteen or fourteen men in the town with him to come at nine next morning to his lodgings for supplies.

On the morning of Thursday the rebels arrived at Dumfries with 50 horse and 150, foot. Neilson of Corsack, and Gray, who commanded, with a considerable troop, entered the town, and surrounded Sir James, Turner's lodging. Though it was between eight and nine o'clock, that worthy, being unwell, was still in bed, but rose at once and went to the window.

Neilson and some others cried, "You may have fair quarter."

"I need no quarter," replied Sir James; "nor can I be a prisoner, seeing there is no war declared." On being told, however, that he must either be a prisoner or die, he came down, and went into the street in his night-shirt. Here Gray showed himself very desirous of killing him, but he was overruled by Corsack. However he was taken away a prisoner, Captain Gray mounting him on his Own horse, though, as Turner naively remarks "there was good reason for it, for he mounted himself on a farre better one of mine." A large coffer containing his clothes and money, together with all his papers, were taken away by the rebels. They robbed Master Chalmers, the Episcopalian minister of Dumfries, of his horse, drank the King's health at the market cross, and then left Dumfries. [13]

C. H. Spurgeon on "The Pilgrim's Progress

We recently came across a rare book by C. H. Spurgeon on the "Pilgrim's Progress." We share Spurgeon's unique commentary with our readers.

Next to the Bible, the book that I value most is John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress." I believe I have read it through at least a hundred times. It is a volume of which I never seem to tire; and the secret of its freshness is that it is so largely compiled from the Scriptures. It is really Biblical teaching put into the form of a simple yet very striking allegory.

It has been upon my mind to give a series of addresses upon "The Pilgrim's Progress," for the characters described by John Bunyan have their living representatives today, and his words have a message for many who are found in our congregations at the present time.

You remember that, when Christian, with "a book in his hand, and a great burden upon his back," cried out, "What shall I do to be saved? " he "saw a man named Evangelist coming to him," who pointed him to the wicket gate and the shining light. Then Bunyan says -

"So I saw in my dream, that the man began to run. Now, he had not run far from his own door, but his wife and children perceiving it, began to cry after him to return; but the man put his fingers in his ears, and ran on, crying, 'Life! life! eternal life!' (Luke 14: 26). So he looked not behind him, but fled towards the middle of the plain (Gen. 19: 17).

"The neighbours also came out to see him run (Jer. 20: 10); and as he ran, some mocked, others threatened, and some cried after him to return. Now, among those that did so, there were two that were resolved to fetch him back by force; the name of the one was Obstinate and the name of the other Pliable."

Instead of yielding to them, Christian began at once to plead with them to go along with him. Obstinate met all his pleas with mockery and abuse, but Pliable was easily persuaded to go. He is a type of those who, apparently, set out for Heaven; but who have not the root of the matter in them, and, therefore, soon turn back. The likeness that Bunyan has drawn of him is worthy of our attentive consideration, for it is true in every line. [14]


JERUSALEM - Roman Catholic Archbishop Hilarion Capucci was convicted by an Israeli court in December of smuggling guns and explosives into Israel for Arab terrorists and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Observers believe that the Archbishop will eventually be deported from Israel rather than jailed.


Milan - Panorama, a news weekly, has charged that the Vatican is removing from office Bishop Paul Marcinkus, an American who heads the Vatican's banking institution, for allegedly losing millions in Vatican funds through dealings with Italian financier Michele Sindona. Sindona is under investigation in the United States and Italy in connection with several bank failures. The Vatican has denied the reports.


US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger met Pope Paul VI in a private audience in the Vatican on November 5. So far as is known, Secretary Kissinger has no plans to visit the Archbishop of Canterbury, the World Council of Churches, the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, the Patriarch of Constantinople, or the president of the Baptist World Alliance. Dr. Kissinger visited the rope while in Rome for the World Food Conference. Pope Paul received Conference delegations at a special audience on November 9.


A plea for legalised prostitution and state registered brothels was turned down by the Government.

The plea came from a group - including Methodist church members - in Southampton because of prostitution activity near their homes.

But Home Office Minister of State, Alex Lyon said though he recognised the "great difficulties" caused by prostitutes in residential areas, "nevertheless I would question whether legalised brothels would be a satisfactory answer." [15]


Littleton, Colorado, - St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church has been granted a license to sell liquor in the same building in which Mass is offered, despite protests from community and church members.

The license is the first granted to a church in Colorado.

The Rev. Frederick McCallin, asked for the liquor license so that the church could sell alcoholic beverages when it opens a restaurant later this month. The restaurant, which is to be part of a community center being built by the church won't have a bar and will serve liquor only with meals.

However, opponents have said that the church should not be granted a liquor license because the restaurant will be located in the same building in which Mass will be offered until another building is constructed for that purpose.

Others have said the church should try to discourage persons from using alcohol, instead of selling it to them.


As everyone surely knows by now, the world is on the threshold of a major disaster. Food, water, fertilizer, and energy are in short supply, while population continues to zoom upward at an average rate of 2.4 per cent. annually. Nearly 500 million people are threatened with starvation; 10 million will probably starve to death this year.

The crisis demands that food production be increased and that population growth be curbed. But just as the World Food Conference was getting under way in Rome in early November, Pope Paul VI, the world's most powerful religious leader, reiterated to the assembled delegates his strong opposition to effective, humane population limitation.

A religious leader has a right to express his opinions. But when his political influence is so enormous that his views may indirectly be the cause of widespread suffering and even death, we hope that political leaders around the world will ignore his attempts to interfere with rational and humane efforts to prevent starvation.


Canon Dermot Fogarty, parish priest of St. Richard's Chichester, celebrated Mass in Chichester's Anglican cathedral on January 23, the occasion being part of the Week of Prayer for Church Unity. This was the first time since the Reformation that Mass had been celebrated there by a Roman Catholic priest.
