Irish Presbyterians Stay In World Council of Churches

After all the furore about coming out of the World Council of Churches (WCC) the General Assembly of the Irish Presbyterian Church backed away from making a decision.

Instead they instructed their Inter Church Relations Board to prepare for next year a report showing reasons why the Church should remain in the WCC.

Of course those evangelicals in the Campaign for Complete Withdrawal from the World Council of Churches had kept themselves right no matter what way the decision went.

In their leaflet No. 1, they stated:

"In the event of the failure of the General Assembly to decide to withdraw (from the World Council of Churches) there will be no question of our leaving the Presbyterian Church." [2]

The Executive Committee of the Campaign for Complete Withdrawal is Revs. W. Fleming (Chairman); R. Dickinson (Secretary); F. J. Kelly and I. W. Neilly. Messrs. W. Lavery, D. Robb, R. J. Stewart (Treasurer) and Suitters.

Instead of withdrawing the Assembly continued to make haste down the Roman Road. The Report of the Inter Church Relations Board had two important items which fully demonstrate this. Under the heading of the Irish Council of Churches the following appeared:

The Baptist Union of Ireland is to be honoured for refusing the invitation and we would sincerely hope that the other groups will do likewise. Rome however, has accepted and is placed on a par with the rest as a Christian Church. Yet the head of the Roman System the Pope is described in the Presbyterian Confession of Faith as "that Antichrist the Man of Sin and Son of Perdition" and all the ministers and elders of the Assembly swore solemnly at their ordination that they believed that with all their hearts. They now perjure themselves in their craze for unity with Rome.

Further to the above the Report also records the following:

"THIS WAS APPOINTED IN 1970 BY THE MEMBER CHURCHES OF THE ICC (Irish Council of Churches) AND THE IRISH HIERARCHY (The Archbishops and Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church) 'TO ADVISE ON THE ROLE OF THE CHURCHES IN IRISH SOCIETY' IT CONTINUES TO MEET." See page 73 Annual Reports.

So collaboration and co-operation with the Church of Rome presses forward. It is to be noted that at the consecration of the new Church of Ireland Bishop of Londonderry, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the City and the Moderator of the Irish Presbyterian Church walked together in the same procession. Dr. Wynne looks on the Roman Church as a truly Christian Church and its Pope and Bishops as true ministers of God even although he swore at his ordination to believe that "the mass was abominably repugnant to Christ."

World Council Membership Splits the Presbyterians

The Moderator, the Right Rev. Dr. George Wynne, ruled that any change in the Church's constitution required one year's notice of motion. This had not been given by the five Presbyteries. But Dr. Wynne also ruled that the petitions should be received and the Assembly proceeded to engage in a lengthy wrangle as to whether the move for withdrawal from the World Council should be allowed to come up next year as a motion.

It was eventually decided that the request be accepted as notice of motion: that the inter-church relations board be instructed to prepare a critical evaluation of the grounds put forward for withdrawal from the World Council of Churches and to present to Presbyteries and kirk sessions full and accurate information concerning the nature and work of the World Council of Churches.

Kirk sessions and Presbyteries were also authorised to examine all information which might be forthcoming about the work of the World Council from groups within the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

Despite the constitutional straitjacket of the debate the rival theological mentalities found persistent - often repetitive - expression. It was a debate in which warnings were given of the danger of Communist takeovers in Dublin, Belfast and London if the "left" took over the direction of world religion.

One speaker warned the predominantly male Assembly that the World Council of Churches was vulnerable to women's liberation and that Jesus Christ was in danger of a sex change. "The Lord would become a She," he remarked.

One young minister complained that yesterday's debate had been preceded by a "commission" campaign: that is a mustering of votes prior to the Assembly. "Should the same whispers and rumours take place next year it will be duty for us to ask straight questions," he added. "The business [4] of loving God should not be conducted in the way of some dubious political.

The debate was nevertheless far from devoid of theological content. Scriptural quotations were given as frantically as the search for material about the record of the World Council in places as far apart as Spain and the Sudan.

A succinct case against the World Council was presented by the Rev. William Craig, who identified three objections: Firstly, the operation of the special fund meant the giving of Church money to guerrilla organisations; secondly, the motivation behind the World Council was a liberation theology whose essence did not adhere to the Reformation idea that salvation was essentially personal, but maintained that society needed to be saved from collective sin; and thirdly, that membership of the World Council involved the Presbyterian Church in a situation of "doctrinal ambiguity" as other member Churches did not have the same standard of confessional belief as did Irish Presbyterians.

The most eloquent defence of the World Council came from the Rev. Robert Brown, who pointed out that in so far as the grounds for disagreement from the World Council were with particular policies, such disagreement was not a basis for withdrawal. He also attacked the "evil" propaganda campaign of misinformation by the anti-council group.

Most significantly he put his hand on the pulse of the Irish Presbyterian Church. Theologically, he maintained, the issue underlying the debate was not one of membership simply in the World Council. "It concerns a critical confusion and division in our own Church on the nature and function of the Church," he said.

"For many of those who oppose our membership of the World Council," he said, "withdrawal from that body is but the starter for withdrawal from all our inter-Church contracts, from the British Council of Churches, the Irish Council of Churches, and, inevitably, from the world alliance of Reformed Churches, and, indeed to schism within our own Church in the pursuit of a purist concept of the Church."

Mr. Brown claimed that if those opposed to the World Council wished to convince supporters that the World Council was inimical to the Irish Presbyterian Church being a Christian body then they would have to substantiate such a view with a clearly formulated and adequate doctrine.

Similarly, those in favour of the World Council would have to convince opponents that the World Council's work was "the very work of the Spirit of God." Such a case should be Biblical, evangelical and Catholic [5] in its doctrinal scope, he indicated. Communication was required.

The Rev. David Lapsley alleged that many of the assertions of those opposed to the World Council were based on inaccuracies. The Church was providing itself with a recipe for schism that could only please those opposed to Presbyterianism. Members of the Assembly were acting more like members of football teams rather than as fellow Christians.

A moving appeal for Presbyterians to remain a Church and not become a sect came from the Rev. Donald Gillies a former opponent of the World Council who now favours continued membership of the Council.

Other notable speeches came from Miss Fanny Robertson, who as a conservative evangelical, appealed for Presbyterians to be ecumenical in outlook, and from the Rev. G. B. G. McConnell, of Dublin, who urged that the Presbyterian Church should not retreat into a little temple of its own.

In the coming year both sides will be engaged in information gathering for their respective cases. A major test of fellowship and friendship will be whether common educational ground can be found between the two wings of the Church.

Condemned out of my Own Mouth By DONALD GILLIES

At the forefront of the controversy over the Irish Presbyterian Church's membership of the WCC has been the Rev. Donald Gillies, one-time advocate of withdrawal, but now calling for staying in. Writing in the Belfast Telegraph, Gillies argues thus:

"Withdrawal for the reasons given would be a serious departure from the Westminster Confession of Faith." "It would be entirely wrong to judge the WCC by the statements of individuals." "The Presbyterian voice will lose if they quit the WCC." [6]

Gillies admits that he is a representative to the British Council of Churches, the UK wing of the WCC. On television he argued that the case put forward by the anti-WCC group - namely the support of terrorists by the WCC and its Romeward trend - is not a valid case for withdrawal.

Gillies is the author of the book Unity in the Dark an exposure of and attack on the Ecumenical movement.

In 1964 along with almost 70 Presbyterian ministers Gillies petitioned the General Assembly and advised them of their "deep concern about trends in the ecumenical movement in which we are involved as a Church by virtue of its membership of the WCC."

His book was the charter of the Anti-WCC company but significantly Gillies never allowed it to be reprinted. The reason must be that time, [7] and ecumenical chloroform have lulled his sensitivity.

IN 1964 Gillies said: "The Ecumenical Movement is revolutionary in thought and practice and bids to become the greatest menace to, the truth of the Gospel since the time of the Reformation." NOW he says stay close to the menace.

IN 1964 Gillies said: "Our complaint about the WCC is that the vital truths of the Gospel are ignored, if NOT DENIED, and the emphasis is upon this world, and the social rather than the Spiritual needs of man." NOW he says this objective has become "a very complex question."

IN 1964 Gillies said: "The participation of evangelicals in the Ecumenical movement has alarming implications. There are positive dangers inherent in this position; the very act of participation incurs guilt." NOW he says "Withstand evil" rather than "Withdraw from evil."

1964 "The ecumenical climate is slowly drying up our evangelical fervour. The soft winds of false doctrine are lulling us to sleep and carrying us slowly but surely in a Romeward direction." Alas Donald has nodded off!

1964 "The Ecumenical Movement is an affront to truth, and is the enemy of the Gospel of regeneration by the Spirit."

Donald has condemned himself out of his own mouth. The categorical objections he put forth in 1964, he now side-steps and advocates staying in. What saith the Scriptures: "From such withdraw thyself" read I Tim. 6:3-5. "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." Ephesians 5: 11.

STOP PRESS! The Reformed Presbyterian Church have just intimated that they did not receive any such invitation and would not accept it if they did. [8]

The Common Market, the Kingdom of the Anti-christ, Why It Must Be Resisted

I want to speak tonight upon a vitally important subject, "The Common Market, the Kingdom of the antichrist, Why it must be resisted." I want to examine with you this evening the prophetic scriptures.

I read with you tonight part of the second chapter of the prophecy of Daniel. It dealt with the great world empires. It was revealed to the King in a dream, and the dream was certain. Daniel's interpretation of the dream was sure.

Those great empires have come. We are now living today in the final unfolding of the great drama of the world empires of history.

We had the gold of Babylon, the silver of Media Persia, the brass of Greece, the iron of Rome and then the Roman Kingdom divided into the two legs. Then the final manifestation of the Roman Kingdom is seen in the ten toes of Daniel's image.

It is most significant that the Treaty that set up the Common Market is not the Treaty of Brussels or the Treaty of the Six Foundation Members of the Market, but it is the Treaty of Rome.

The Bible, of course, is always right. The more we see the unfolding of the Common Market, the more we can attest our faith afresh in the impregnable scriptures of truth.

Turn from the book of Daniel to the book of the Revelation at chapter thirteen. There you come to the two beasts. You will notice that the first beast is the Anti-christ. The second beast is the false prophet who leads people out to worship and to go under the control of the Anti-christ. The Anti-christ rises from out of the sea. (The sea, of course, to John was the Mediterranean Sea, the great sea of prophecy. So we have the European [9] concept of this beast). You will also notice that this beast has "seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his head the name of blasphemy."

You will notice the description of this beast. "He was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority."

Who is the dragon? Turn back to the previous chapter and you will find out who the dragon is. Verse three of Revelation chapter twelve: "And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born." Turn over a little farther and get the explanation of who the dragon was. Revelation chapter twenty and verse two: "And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan." So the dragon is the Devil. Something happens to this beast of Revelation thirteen and verse two, "The dragon gave him his power." He will have satanic power, "his seat." Of course the seat of the king speaks to us of regal and royal authority. He is going to have that regal power from the Devil. He is also going to have great authority.

Just as God has given to Christ all power in heaven and on earth, just as Christ has sat down on the Father's Throne, just as Christ has been given all authority, so the Devil elevates the Anti-christ. What God has done for Christ, the Devil attempts to do for the Anti-christ.

If you come down this chapter thirteen you will find that when another beast comes out of the earth (verse eleven) the false prophet he leads men out to worship the first beast. I want you to notice something about this false prophet. Verse seventeen, "that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." So the beast is not only in the religious field, for his head has upon it the name of blasphemy, but he is in the economic field. The strength of the beast is in the field of the economy of the world. So much so that men cannot buy or sell or do their business except they have a mark of the beast or the number of his name. So the strength of this beast will be in the economic sphere.

Turn over to chapter seventeen. In this chapter you will find the beast [10] again. This time the beast is associated with a woman. Verse three, "So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns." Now here is the beast again - but this time in association with the woman. Now who is this woman? You will find her name in verse five. She is "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS, AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus." Do you want a key to who this woman is? Verse eighteen, "And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." There was only one great city that reigned over the kings of the earth in John's day, and that was the city of Rome. But this woman is not just the city of Rome, she is "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS, AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."

Turn back to chapter twelve and you will find another woman. "A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars." A picture of the church. The church in association with the man child, with the true Christ. In this chapter seventeen you have the false church depicted as a mother. She is not depicted in isolation. She is depicted as a mother church. This is none other than the Roman Catholic Church. What other church is drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus? I want you to notice something. If you turn over to chapter eighteen you will discover that this woman and the beast that she rides upon are related to the economy of the world. Look at verse eleven of chapter eighteen, "And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more. The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble. And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, (watch the next one) and oil, and fine flour, and wheat and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, (And mark the last one) and the souls of men." So this woman and the beast on which she rides, controls and dominates, and makes subject to her laws and her wishes the merchandise of the world. So we are getting the picture.

If we want to up-date the picture by looking at verse twelve of chapter seventeen of Revelation, "And the [11] ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdoms as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast." So the final manifestation of the beast and his kingdom will be in a ten kingdom structure. When will that ten kingdom structure come about? We get the key to that in the book of Daniel..

Turn back to Daniel chapter two and verse thirty-three, "His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till (Daniel kept looking until!) that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet, that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces." Now the stone cut out of the mountain without hands is of course the Lord Jesus Christ. The Rock of Ages! At His coming He is going to smash the kingdom of the Antichrist.

You will notice that the stone does not strike the head, because the Babylonian Empire is over. It does not strike the breasts and arms, because the Media Persia Kingdom is past. It does not strike the belly of brass, because the Grecian Empire is over. It does not strike the legs of iron, because the divided Roman Empire is over. But it strikes the ten toes of the image. The ten toes of the image are the ten kings of the beast. So when Jesus Christ comes in judgment there will be upon this earth a ten kingdom system. It will be situated in that part of Europe that was once controlled by the old Roman Empire.

It is not important, I do not think, to draw that Empire exactly and to say that every part of it may be included. It may and may not. All that I will say to you tonight is thank God, Ulster is not in it, and never was in it. There is hope for us! But England was in it. England however, has greatly changed. As you know there were many invasions of other races since Roman Britain.

The original Britons were cast out. But it is significant that today there is a strong Nationalist movement in Scotland. Remember Scotland was not in the old Roman Empire. Is it not a wonderful thing too that there is a strong Nationalist movement in Wales, because Wales was not in the old Roman Empire. These things do not happen by chance. The map of Europe has been changed over and over again. At the end of the day, however, there will be ten kingdoms in Europe and at the head of those kingdoms there will be the beast and in association with the beast there will be a church, and that church will be the Church of Rome in her final manifestation. Rome not in isolation, but as a mother. The World Council of Churches is bringing the apostate daughters of Rome under the skirt of the mother. It is being fulfilled today. The scaffold is set up for the final building of the kingdom of the Antichrist. [12]

Let me tell you something. The Church of Rome knows what the Common Market is about.

Mrs. Shirley Williams, a member of Mr. Wilson's Party. She is a devout Roman Catholic. She says that all the Ulster loyalists are extremists. She said that Ian Paisley is an extremist. Well, thank God, I am not an extremist like her. I do not worship a wafer. Thank God, I have more sense than that. I do not bow to a priest and ask him to forgive my sins. I do not sprinkle myself with "holy water." I do not burn candle grease. I am saved by grace and not by grease! Thank God for that! And I am not an extremist and a bigot like her. She addressed a meeting of the Catholic Socialist Guild in London. This is what she said, "We will be joined to a Europe in which the Catholic religion will be the dominant faith. And in which the application of Catholic social doctrine will be a major factor in everyday political and economic life." So Mrs. Shirley Williams sees that this Common Market is something more than a political get together. She sees it as a place where her faith will be so predominant that it will enter into the everyday political and social lives of the people.

Let us examine the Common Market. In the six foundation members of the Common Market there is one hundred and seventy-five million of a population. Do you know how many Roman Catholics are in that population? One hundred and fifty-four million Roman Catholics. So when we joined the Common Market we became a Protestant minority in an overwhelming Roman Catholic federation of nations.

The Vatican, they know what is happening. A Vatican spokesman referring to the EEC, the European Economic Community or the Common Market, said "It is the greatest Catholic super state the world has ever known." "The greatest Catholic super State the world has ever known."

Thank God, on the 5th June I am going to say "No" to the greatest Catholic super State the world has ever known. And if you do not vote "No" do not come back here, you are not wanted! Let me say that to you.

There was a meeting in Garvagh the other evening. One of the Masters of the Orange Order, Mr. William Douglas, said to the Orangemen "You have a duty to go out on the 5th of June and vote against the Common Market." He said "If you do not vote against it, do not turn up on the 12th July. We do not want anything to do with you." That was right. If any Protestant tells you we should stay in Europe, he is either deceived or is a fool. Yes! The greatest Catholic super state in Europe.

The Rome correspondent of The [13] Torch said "The Holy See has set aside one day in the year in honour of the Madonna of the Common Market." The Pope of course has made Mary the Madonna of the Common Market.

We have Mariolatry and idolatry all linked into the Common Market. It is the duty of every Bible Christian to vote against the Common Market and to campaign vigorously against the Common Market. If you value your Reformation heritage, if you value your Bible, your freedom and your Protestant faith, you should be out doing everything to influence men and women to say "No" in God's Name on the 5th June. You have got to do it. There is a great tendency among people today to say "It does not really matter." My friend, it is one of the most important votes you ever took part in.

The Vatican says that "one day in the year has been set aside in honour of the Madonna of the Common Market when prayers are said and candles lit in all Roman Catholic churches for the intervention and protection of the Virgin Mary. The Common Market is after all the greatest Catholic business in history."

A leading Romanist priest, Father Gordon Albion, said "Britain's joining of the EEC offers promise of far more than economic gain at least to the historically minded, especially to the Catholic who knows his history."

It is not a promise of an economic benefit. If you study the economy of the Common Market you will discover that the six are milking Britain. Britain is actually economically poorer because of her membership of the Common Market.

The Belfast Telegraph carried an article and in that article they said that in 1970 Britain had a balance with the Common Market countries in the black in her favour. Tonight what is her balance? Two thousand millions in the red. That is the trade balance. Those figures alone would condemn the Common Market.

I want you to notice something that is very important. The German Foreign Minister has declared the final target of the EEC is not a mutual benefit club but the political unity of Europe.

Every week I get three Roman Catholic newspapers. I think the newspaper boy that delivers them is a bit suspicious! Maybe he thinks that Paisley is a secret Romanist at heart! But I believe in getting these papers and studying them and learning what Rome is about. All these papers are plugging as hard as they can, the Common Market. I notice from St. John Stevas to Garret Fitzgerald, that they are all together. John Biggs-Davison, the President of the Monday Club, who is supposed to be a Right-Winger, is a Roman Catholic and therefore he is for the Common [14] Market. While the Monday Club in a whole would be against it, he is for the Market because it is a Roman Catholic set-up. Garret Fitzgerald let the cat out of the bag and said that it is the only way for a unified Ireland. Oh yes! Why? The Roman Catholic States of Europe will not have time for a Protestant Ulster. Do you think they will have any time for this part of the United Kingdom which is the last bastion of Protestantism?

I believe that all our trouble started with the Common Market. I believe that when Mr. Heath started his negotiations it was made clear to him that there must be a United Ireland. There must be a United Ireland. I believe that the whole British Government has been working towards that end, in unifying this island of Ireland.

You know it is a mystery. The Ulster Farmers' Union who ought to know something about agriculture in this land, today have fallen to the propaganda of the enemy. The Ulster Farmers' Union have called the farmers to vote for the Common Market. The Economic Community has almost put the Ulster agriculture into the graveyard. Even one of the leaders of the Pig Marketing Board said he admitted that the Common Market had ruined the Pig Industry in Ulster. Do you know what he said? "I am a member of a committee at Brussels. I am trying to change it." I want to tell you that Mr. Callaghan and Harold Wilson thought they would re-negotiate the Treaty of Rome but found they couldn't. But hope has a solo member of the UFU.

I have found in this Common Market struggle the intense hatred of pro-Marketeers for the true Protestantism of God's Word.

It is all right for Shirley Williams to talk about the Roman Catholic benefits of the Common Market. It is all right for the Pope to make Mary the Madonna of the Common Market. But if you stand up and say, for religious reasons, you are against the Common Market, then you are branded as a bigot. You are branded as a traitor. You are branded as an extremist. You are even branded as a Paisleyite, if you would take up such an attitude. So the Roman Catholics can preach "it is good for our church." But Protestants are not permitted to stand up and speak on the Common Market in its Protestant aspect.

I come back to the scriptures. "These shall make war with the Lamb" (Revelation seventeen and verse fourteen). And I want to tell you that we are moving into a time of religious persecution, when these nations of Europe are going to insist on one church; one church for Europe and that church will be the Roman Catholic Church. The apostate churches that are in our land, in the World Council of Churches, do you know what they [15] are doing? They are helping to build the kingdom of the Anti-christ. They are part of this great apostasy.

I have one final word for you. Verse four of Revelation chapter eighteen. Turn it over in your minds. "And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins." I trust that the British nation will hear that word on the 5th June. That God will say with power to this nation, "Come out of her my people." And I trust that every man and woman in this house tonight, and across our Province will take their stand against what is nothing less than the kingdom of the Anti-christ and the final manifestation of the man of sin in the end time day in which we live.

The Day the Cardinals Returned to Canterbury

The Most Rev. Father in God Donald Coggan, Archbishop of Canterbury by Divine providence and the patronage of Harold Wilson, the 101st holder of this high office in a line going back to Saint Augustine, was on Friday, 24th January, 1975, enthroned at Canterbury Cathedral and took his place on the great stone chair of that saint.

He was enthroned in much state, wearing mitre, cope, scarlet fochet, and chimer, and with trumpets and Lord Mayors and all the other temporal trappings properly necessary to celebrate his assumption of the spiritualities of the primacy of the Anglican Church.

But it was a ceremony by no means so traditional as it looked.

Never before, which is astonishing, has Royalty been present. But here was Prince Charles, who had descended by helicopter and Princess Margaret.

And never before even in those days when the Roman Catholics were the previous tenants, before the Reformation, has a cardinal been present.

But here were three cardinals and one apostolic delegate.

No wonder the only person the Vatican patronised prelate singled out for attack when he was in Ulster was Dr. Paisley. Dr. Paisley's Protestantism was offensive to this modern Sharpe.

Sharpe was the Archbishop whose fingers dripped with the blood of the Covenanters, [16]

Let others hold their peace about Hell if they will - I dare not do so. I see it plainly in the Scriptures, and I must speak of it. I fear that thousands are on the broad road that leads to it, and I would arouse them to a sense of peril before them. What would you say of the man who saw his neighbour's house in danger of being burned down and never raised the cry of "Fire"?

Beware of new and strange doctrines about Hell and the eternity of punishment. Beware of manufacturing a God of your own - a God who is all love, but not holy - a God who has a Heaven for everybody, but a Hell for none - A God who can allow good and bad to be side by side for time, but will make no distinction between good and bad in eternity. Such is not the God of the Bible, and besides the God of the Bible there is no God at all.

Ah, reader, there is a Hell! Take heed lest you find it too late. You must read it all and believe it all. Dare not to say, "I refuse that for I cannot reconcile it with my views." "Nay, but O man, who art thou that repliest against God?" Surely it were better to say over every chapter in the Word "Speak Lord for thy servant heareth." If men; were to do this, they would never throw overboard the doctrine of eternal punishment of the wicked. "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."

I would rather be the means of saving a soul from death than to be the greatest orator on earth. I would rather bring the poorest woman in the world to the feet of Jesus than I would to be made the Archbishop of Canterbury. I would sooner pluck one single brand from the burning than to explain all mysteries.

To win a soul from going down into the pit, is a more glorious achievement than to be crowned in the arena of theological controversy as Dr. Sufficientissimus; to have faithfully unveiled the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ will be in the final judgment, accounted worthier service than to have solved the problems of the glorious Sphinx, or to cut the Gordian knot of Apocalyptic difficulty.

One of my happiest thoughts is that when I die it shall be my privilege to enter into rest in the bosom of Christ and to know that I shall not enjoy my Heaven alone. Thousands have already entered there who have been drawn to Christ under my ministry. Oh, what bliss it will be to fly to Heaven to have a multitude of converts before and behind, and, on entering the glory, to be able to say, "Here am I, Father, and the children Thou hast given me."
