NONE DARES CALL IT BIGOTRY
If you oppose the Roman Catholic Church today you will be immediately branded a 'bigot'.
This is Rome's move to silence any voice raised to expose her villainies. The press and other media, manipulated by the Jesuits of Rome, immediately take up Rome's cry and re-echo loudly the charge, 'bigot'.
Those dupes of popery, the ecumenists, under the orchestration of the cardinals, also join loudly in the chorus, chanting 'bigot! bigot! bigot!'
In its announced goal, 'Make Britain Catholic', the Roman Catholic Church seeks to force its doctrines and practices upon our nation regardless of their truth or falsehood and regardless of the desires of the majority of our people. The one all important strategy is to label everyone who opposes it a 'bigot'.
The following is taken from Dr. Loraine Boettner's classic, "Roman Catholicism":
"The Roman Catholic Church, whatever may be its other faults, is never lacking in shrewdness or in good strategists . . . The Jesuits have urged the Catholic Church to label every criticism of the Roman Church as 'bigotry'." (Christian Today, issue of October 28).
But when the facts of history are examined Protestants stand forth clearly not as 'bigots' but as the real champions of religious and political liberty, while on the other hand Roman Catholicism

The Authority Of Scripture versus The Confusion Of Modern English Translations
A sermon preached by Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley
John Bunyan the immortal dreamer, in his Pilgrim's Progress describes how in the house of the interpreter the first thing Christian was shown was the picture of a very grave person hung up against the wall. "it had eyes lift up to Heaven, the best of Books in his hand, the law of truth was written on his lips, the world was behind his back. It stood as if it pleaded with men, and a crown of gold did hang over its head."
THE WORD OF GOD
"The best of Books in his hand" - what is that Book. That best of Books? That Book is not man's but God's. It is the Book of books, the Volume of volumes, the Writing of writings. Man did not write this Book. He was told to write it.
To the Infidel this Book is the butt of his hatred and derision. To the agnostic this Book is the target of his unbelief. To the apostate this Book is a compilation of unnamed contributors who have no real names, but like E.T. go by initials such as J or E or P, etc. Its histories are viewed as imaginings; its miracles are viewed as make-believe; its God is viewed as a myth; its Christ as a tradition; its Cross as a deception and its salvation as a falsehood.
To the Romanist this Book is dethroned to take its place alongside the idolatrous traditions of the church. To the charismatic this Book is the incomplete Word of God, requiring the aids, augmentations and additions of the tongues appendix. To the new evangelicals in principle this Book is God's Word but its authority can be set aside and its commandments wilfully violated at the whim of seeking a larger church fellowship with unbelievers.
To God this Book is higher than the heavens. Listen, Psalm 138 verse 2: "Thou hast magnified Thy Word above all Thy Name." To Christ this Book is the authorised pen portrait of Himself. Listen, Psalm 40 verse 7: "In the volume of the Book it is written of Me," and again: "They are they which testify of Me," John 5:39. To the Holy Ghost this Book is His own handiwork. The production of His own mind. The in-breathing of His own Divine Being. Listen, 2 Peter 1:21: "For the prophecy came not in old time (or at any time) by the will of man but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." And further, what did David say? "The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and His word was in my tongue," II Samuel 23:2.
To the Fundamentalist this Book is the verbally inspired Word of the Living God. We believe it to be inerrant, "It is true from the beginning," Psalm 119:160. Infallible - "The utterance of the God Who cannot lie," Titus 1:2, and impregnable, "The Scriptures cannot be broken," John 10:35.
In this Congress we have been saying: "We will continue to believe it; we will continue to proclaim it. We will continue to defend it and if needs be die for it." We clasp it to our bosoms. We hide it in our hearts. We raise it as our standard. We read it as our marching orders in the day of battle. We partake of it as the bread of life. We cling to it as our life preserver. We wield it as our sword. We hail it as our all in all.
To the Devil this Book is the weapon of his certain destruction, hence his satanic fury against it. It thwarted him after man's fall with its promise of the coming Seed. It foiled his plan to destroy the Seed Royal. It was used by Christ in the temptation to vanquish him. "It is written", "It is written", It is written". These were mortal cuts from its stout Jerusalem blade, cuts from which he never has and never will recover. Hence his continued hatred of the Book of Deuteronomy from which they all were taken. It finally trod him down at Calvary, bruising for ever his diabolical head and nullifying eternally his hellish power. "It is finished" - that was his death-blow for ever. Today Satan lives in perpetual fear of that great day when He, whose Name written on the vesture of Blood is, "The Word of God", shall ride on His white horse. Then shall be witnessed the final overthrow of Satan and the putting down of his kingdom for ever. Then shall angels - both archangel and ordinary, cherubim and seraphim, and saints of all ages, utter in unison that anthem of eternal praise, Hallelujah for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
As we take up this Holy Volume we would do well to consider four most important and vital matters. It is essential that we have crystal-clear views on these, for they lie at the very foundation, they are indeed fundamentals:
1. The Bible's revelation.
2. The Bible's inspiration.
3. The Bible's preservation.
4. The Bible's translation.
1. THE BIBLE'S REVELATION
The Bible is here. The fact of the Bible cannot be denied. Well may we ask the question of the poet:-
"Whence but from Heaven could men unskilled in arts,
In several ages, born in several parts,
Weave such agreeing truths? or how or why
Should all conspire to cheat us with a lie?
Unasked their pains, ungrateful their advice,
Starving their gains and martyrdom their price."
The only adequate and satisfying answer to the fact of Creation is, "In the beginning God". "For He spake and it was done, He commanded and it stood fast," Psalm 33:9. So with the Bible God spake and this Book was done, He commanded and this Book stood fast.
God has written three Books, the Book of Nature with Creation as its theme, the Book of Providence with circumstances as its theme, and the Book of Redemption with Christ as its theme. Sinful man, fallen man, rebellious man, cannot read any of these Books because his eyes have been put out like Samson's by the great uncircumcised Philistine enemy called sin. If man would read these Books and understand them aright, he must be spiritually enlightened by the Holy Ghost.
The natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit, neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned. The carnal mind is at enmity against God and is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be. What is more, until man learns to read in the Book of Redemption he cannot read aright the Books of Creation and Providence. Now this brings me to the important theme, the Bible's revelation. The Bible's revelation is special. It differs from the revelation God has given of Himself in Creation and Providence, for it has been perpetuated in writing, it is a written revelation.
Both in the Old and New Testaments various words are used which bring out the meaning of special revelation. These varying words are "to discover", "to see", "to declare", "to appear", "to make visible", "to make known", "to show", "to speak", "to reveal", "to make manifest". Special revelation is a making known something not already known, a revealing of something previously hidden. Special revelation not only conveys new light but also new sight to see that new light.
God has used three modes in which to manifest Himself to man by special revelation. These are: (1) theophany - an appearance of His Person; (2) prophecy - a foretelling of His purpose; (3) miracle - a supernatural demonstration of His power. Theophany is linked with God's Person; prophecy is linked with God's purpose; miracle is linked with God's power. The Bible is the only Divine written record we have of theophanies, prophecies and miracles, thus special revelation is limited to the Bible.
In the Bible God has put into the written record the truths of natural revelation and cleared them of all misconception. In addition, He has revealed Himself in the great scheme of man's redemption, and provided a cure for the spiritual blindness of man in the work of spiritual illumination, regeneration and sanctification, whereby sinful man can obtain the true knowledge of God which imparts eternal life. John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom Thou hast sent."
Listen, the explanation of Creation is Christ the Eternal Word. John 1:1-3, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him: and without Him was not anything made that was made." All divine revelation centres on Christ. Hebrews 1:1-2, "God, Who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, Whom He hath appointed Heir of all things, by Whom also He made the world." Christ In Scripture Is the essence of divine revelation. He cannot be known apart from the Scriptures.
God then has specially and supernaturally revealed Himself to men by theophany, prophecy and miracle, and that special revelation has been made permanent in writing. That writing is the Bible. The sum total of that special revelation, the Apex of its manifestation, the Climax of its unfolding is Christ Himself. The inspired Word, the Scriptures of truth, leads to the Incarnate Word, the Saviour of the World.
The only authority on Christ is the Bible and the Bible alone. The only unfolding of Christ is the Bible and the Bible alone. The only teaching about Christ is the Bible and the Bible alone.
Christ cannot be known apart from this Book. Those who do not honour this Book cannot and do not honour Christ. Those who do not believe this Book cannot and do not believe Christ. Those who do not submit to this Book cannot and do not submit themselves to Christ.
Christ Is the only way to God and this Book Is the only way to Christ. When we touch this Book anywhere we touch Christ somewhere. To reject this Book is to reject Christ. To fight against this Book is to fight against Christ. To oppose this Book is to oppose Christ. To despise this Book is to despise Christ. God's two Words, the Inspired Word and the Incarnate Word, are indissolubly united by God and what God hath joined together let not man put asunder.
Having thus dealt with the Bible's revelation let us now turn, secondly, to the Bible's inspiration.
2. THE BIBLE'S INSPIRATION
I am not here to argue about the various theories of inspiration. With those theories I have nothing whatsoever to do. I am here to state the results of inspiration. Divine inspiration has accomplished something, it has produced something, it has achieved something - the Bible. Now that Bible claims to be and is the Inspired Book. By that I mean that the words of it are the very utterance of the Holy Spirit. This Book is as much the Word, of God as if high Heaven were opened and we heard God speaking to us in a human voice. With Dean Burgon I say: "The Bible Is none other than the voice of Him that sitteth on the Throne." Every Book of it, every chapter of it, every verse of it, every word of it, every syllable of it, every letter of it, is the direct utterance of the Most High. Well spake the Holy Ghost by the mouth of the many blessed man who wrote it - the Bible is none other than the Word of God, not some part of it, more, not some part of it less, but all alike. "The utterance of Him Who sitteth on the Throne, Absolute, Faultless, Unerring, Supreme."
In case some critic thinks we take too high a view of what Divine inspiration accomplished, could I say this is the view of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He told us that not a "jot" - the smallest Hebrew letter, nor a "tittle" - the smallest pen stroke distinguishing one Hebrew letter from another, would pass away till all be fulfilled.
He also proved the doctrine of the Resurrection on the tense of the verb "to be", reminding the infidel Sadducees that God at the burning bush said, "I Am (present tense) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob", not "I was" (past tense), thus concluding that God is not the God of the dead but of the living, for Abraham, Isaac and Jacob live on.
This is what Divine Inspiration accomplished; this is what Divine Inspiration produced; this is what Divine Inspiration achieved, the Infallible Word of God, committed eternally to writing, a writing known as Scripture, absolutely accurate, totally inerrant, supremely impregnable, unquestionably reliable.
But some may say, how come there are human characteristics in the various Books of the Bible? For example, John writes differently from Paul and Paul from Peter. That question is best answered by way of illustration. As different wind instruments, all playing the same notes, retain their own particular individuality though sounded by the same breath, so the writers of the Bible, though absolutely controlled by the same breath of inspiration, nevertheless retain their own particular individuality. Characteristic expressions are subtly embalmed in their writings but the whole, even to the very words, is Divinely given.
The human pen-men were so come upon by the Holy Spirit that he communicated His Word to them and enabled them to write down that Word without error, addition or deletion. This inspiration produced inscripturation, the infallible Bible, every Book of it being inspired alike and inspired entirely. And let me emphasize that inspiration has only to do with the writing of the original Scripture and is divinely limited to that. Inspiration has not to do with the translation of the Bible into English or any other language. Inspiration ceased when the Canon of Scripture was completed.
3. THE BIBLE'S PRESERVATION
The Bible's preservation is a fact. The Bible is still with us. It has been miraculously and mysteriously preserved. The many promises of God concerning its preservation have been gloriously fulfilled. Let us glance at a few of them.
In the Old Testament the Book of the Law was preserved in the Ark of the Covenant, Deut. 31, vs. 24-26. The Ark of the Covenant is a type of Christ. So Christ the Great King and Head of His Church has and will preserve His Word to all and for all generations. In the Old Testamentthe priests were the custodians of the Scriptures but in the New Testament the universal priesthood of all believers are its custodians. The faith was delivered not to the scholars, not to the schools, not to the Pope or some monastery, not to some church but to the saints.
I believe just in the same way that the Canon of Holy Scripture was historically accepted (66 books and the Apocryphal rejected) by the universal acceptance of the believers, so the text of Holy Scripture was historically accepted by the same universal consent of the believers. As the believers exercised both a positive and negative consent with regard to the Canon - rejecting apocryphal books and accepting the genuine books, so with regard to the text I believe that they accepted the genuine and rejected the corrupt and the counterfeit.
It is the purpose of Satan to destroy God's Word. The famous Bishop Jewell said:-
"Cities fall, kingdoms come to nothing, empires fade away as smoke but the Bible remains. That this Book no tyrant should have been able to consume, no tradition to choke, no heretic maliciously to corrupt. That it should stand unto this day, amid the wreck of all that is human, without the alteration of one sentence so as to change the doctrine taught therein, surely this is enough to make us know that there is a very singular providence back of it all, and one which claims our attention in no unremarkable manner."
Attacked from all quarters and giving no quarter, the Bible has had an Ishmaelite experience. Its hand is against everyman and everyman's hand is against it, yet it dwells to this day in the midst of the brethren. Princes, philosophers, prelates and poets have all conspired against it. It has been insulted by the scorn of fools. It has become the jest of infidels and the joke of sceptics. It has been assailed consistently and persistently by professed scholars and has been made the butt of every so-called higher critic.
Assaulted by every known plan of Hell it has come forth unscathed from the inferno. Like the three Hebrew children it has been in the fire and like them it has been wonderfully preserved and there is no smell of burning upon it. The fire has yet to be lit which can destroy it. The steel has yet to be forged which can scar it. The weapon has yet to be devised which can overthrow it. The scholarship has yet to be developed which can discredit it. The science has yet to be created which can demolish it. The plan has yet to be devised which can annihilate it.
The cunning of Hell and the craft of earth have combined against the Bible but it stands unmoved, for it is what W. E. Gladstone, one of England's greatest Prime Minister's, described it to be: "The impregnable rock of Holy Scripture."
So with hellish intent both the pagan world and the papal world tried to destroy the text of Holy Writ but He Who wrote the Book, in keeping with His promise, gloriously preserved it until the time of Reformation came. Then there rose up a glorious company of translators who set to work to give the nations the Bible in their mother tongue. Then aided by the invention of printing, the Word of God was not bound.
I hail this Book this day, remaining amidst the passing and injuries of time, a holy temple unprofaned by the foot of the enemy, an invincible building of God amidst the crumbling ruins of the centuries.
4. THE BIBLE'S TRANSLATION
God has given a saving revelation of Himself. God has by inspiration inscripturated that revelation in the Bible. God has preserved the text of Holy Scripture so that all generations can have access to it. Access to it is achieved by translation.
The Reformation of the 16th century, the greatest revival since the day of Pentecost, was brought about by the translation of God's Word and its propagation. The Reformation did not give us the Bible, the Bible gave us the Reformation. And I must say lovingly, yet strongly, to my brethren who differ from me that I do not believe that it was an erroneous text that brought about such a supernatural intervention of Almighty God. Nor can I accept that the most reliable texts were not discovered until the nineteenth century, when they were found in the trash can of a monastery or in the Pope's library. Because of that I accept what is known as the tradition text or majority text or received text line of English Bibles. The line through which the King James or Authorised Version has come to us via Tyndale - Coverdale - Matthew - Great Bible - Geneva Bible.
In the front of your programme there is an announcement: "The Authorised (King James) Version of the Scriptures is the only English translation that will be read from the Congress platform." The resolution on the Holy Scriptures, passed unanimously by this Congress amongst other things, states: "We recognise the unique and special place of the Authorised (King James Version) providentially preserved by God in the English speaking world." Now you are entitled to ask why, and I want to attempt to answer that question as best I can.
Now let me state emphatically that no translation is given by inspiration of God and what is more the King James Version is a revision rather than a completely new translation. It is unique and special because it comes to us providentially as the direct result of the great Reformation and the line of its Bibles. It is important to note this. An estimate of the make-up of the King James translation and what it retained from the other English Bibles which went before is as follows:
Tyndale, including the Matthew Bible
Coverdale, including the Great Bibles
Geneva Bible and Geneva Testament
Bishops Bible and its Revisions
All other versions before 1611
King James (new translations of the text)
So the King James Version was the apex - the climax of the Reformation English Bibles and came with that special seal of Heaven upon it. Further, the King James Version is based on the Majority Text received by the believers right up to the Reformation period.
Again the King James Version was produced by men absolutely dedicated to the verbal inspiration of the Bible, hence their use of italics to indicate an English word for which there is no equivalent in the original Hebrew and Greek.
The language of the King James Version is chaste and reverent and is in "timeless" English that a child can read, learn, and understand. it has led to sanctity of thought and a worshipful approach to God. It is equally suitable to public and private reading.
The King James Version is special and unique not because it is older but because out of the more than one hundred English versions offered it is the best translation. We cannot and will not exchange it for an inferior version. Its excellence, its faithfulness, its power and its fruitfulness have been well proved by our own personal experience and in the experience of millions more.
Have I got God's Inspired Word in my hand? Yes! The Authorised Version is a reliable and accurate translation of the verbally inspired Word of God and I can pin my hopes on its promises, knowing them to be the Word of a God Who cannot lie. I can absolutely depend upon this Book. It brings to me accurately and plainly the inspired Word of the Living God. A Word eternally begotten in Heaven and eternally settled in Heaven.
Now, 91% of the people of the world do not speak English. Can these people have a reliable Bible? Yes sir! Reliable and accurate translations can bring to them in their own language God's inspired and unerring Word. Just the same way as Luther at the Reformation gave the Bible in German to his own nation.
At the Reformation the Devil tried to destroy the one true Bible, now in this 20th century Reformation the Devil is flooding the markets with a rash of counterfeit and corrupted bibles. The R.S.V., copyrighted to make financial gains for the National Council of Churches; an arm of the apostate W.C.C. The N.E.B., a perversion of Holy Writ, a Bible which ascribes worship to the Devil but not to Christ. The Living Bible, which is a livid libel of God's Holy Word, with its low-down slang words. The Good News Bible for Modern Man, which is bad news for sinful man. The Common Bible, uncommonly corrupt. New International Version, which is internationally misleading.
You say, preacher how can I test these Bibles? The answer is simple the great test question is what think ye of Christ. Examine such Scriptures as Gen. 3:15, Is. 7:14, Micah 5:2. Examine the Scriptures which refer to Christ as the only begotten Son of God. Be sure and look at Roms. 9:3 and Hebrews 1:8 and those Scriptures about the Blood of the Lamb. There need be no confusion - try the Bibles - for there are many false Bibles.
I want to finish with two statements, one from C. H. Spurgeon:
"If the Book be not infallible, where shall we find infallibility? We have given up the Pope, for he has blundered often and terribly; but we shall not set up instead of him a horde of papelings fresh from college. Are these correctors of Scripture infallible? Is it certain that our Bibles are not right, but that the critics must be so? Now, Farmer Smith, when you have read your Bible, and have enjoyed its precious promises, you will tomorrow morning have to go down the street to ask the scholarly man of the parsonage whether this portion of Scripture belongs to the inspired part of the Word or whether it is of dubious authority.
"We shall gradually be so be doubted and criticised that only a few of the most profound will know what is Bible and what is not, and they will dictate to the rest of us. I have no more faith in their mercy than in their accuracy . . . and we are fully assured that our Old English version of the Scriptures is sufficient for plain men for all purposes of life, salvation and goodness. We do not despise learning, but we will never say of culture and criticism, 'These be thy gods, O Israel'."
"I am a creature of a day, passing through life as an arrow through the air. I am a spirit coming from God and returning to God; just hovering over the great gulf; a few moments hence I am seen no more: I drop into an unchangeable eternity. I want to know one thing - the way to Heaven - how to land safe on that happy shore. God Himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a Book. Oh, give me that Book. At any price give me the Book of God. I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one Book. Here, then I am, far from the busy ways of men. I sit down alone; only God is here. In His presence I open, I read His Book for this end - to find the way to Heaven."

[13-18 MEDITATIONS FOR THE MONTH]
GOSPEL CAMPAIGN IN LIVERPOOL
In the Autumn of last year the Committee of the Protestant Reformers' Memorial Free Presbyterian Church in Liverpool was called of God to prepare for a Gospel Campaign. The Rev. S. Scott-Pearson, Bedford, accepted the invitation to preach during the Campaign which was arranged to take place between 2nd and 17th October.
Rev. W. H. Fleming opened the Campaign on Sunday 2nd October and Rev. S. Scott-Pearson ministered from Monday 3rd October.
For three weeks prior to the opening date an out-reach work was undertaken during which some 10,000 houses and flats were visited; the residents in the flats and houses in the immediate vicinity of the church being given a personal invitation to attend the meetings. Much prayer was made to the Lord and we rejoiced in the knowledge that the whole of the Free Church was engaged in prayer on behalf of the mission, as only the grace of God can soften the hearts of sinners, making them responsive to the Gospel.
The nightly attendance averaged 80 persons which meant that over the two weeks, Rev. Scott-Pearson ministered to some 1,000 persons.
The first break was on Wednesday during the first week of the campaign when 2 persons came to know Christ as Saviour. Before the end of the campaign another 5 came to know the Lord. The people saved covered all age groups from young to old. To God be the glory, great things He hath done.
The vigorous preaching of Rev. Scott-Pearson left none in doubt that all had sinned and come short of the glory of God. Not only were sinners saved but God's people were greatly encouraged.
Throughout the Campaign duets were sung by Mr. and Mrs. G. Winnett, accompanied on the piano by Miss Doreen Davies. Much blessing was received as they sang about the wonderful love of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
The Campaign ended with our Harvest Thanksgiving Services when we were able to give thanks to God, not only for the natural harvest home, but also for the spiritual harvest we had experienced.
A time of Christian Fellowship was then enjoyed as we joined together in the Church Hall to partake of a sumptuous supper provided by the ladies of the Church. Thus concluded the first Gospel Campaign held in England by the Free Presbyterian Church and we are praying that the separated witness of our Church will be strengthened thereby.
The Campaign is over. We thank God for those who supported the meetings night by night; for those who responded to the Gospel Call and pray that those who rejected the invitation to attend the meetings will heed the Scriptural warning while there is still time. The Lord's anger "is not turned away but His hand is stretched out still." (Isaiah 9:17).
May the day come soon when they shall be able to say, "O, Lord, I will praise Thee; though Thou wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortest me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; He also is become my salvation." (Isaiah 12:1-2).

MARTIN LUTHER'S COMMENTS ON GREAT TEXTS OF THE BIBLE
Moses in Deuteronomy 4:2 says, "Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish aught from it."
But some one will say that Moses speaks only of his word; but to the books of Moses there have also been added many books of the prophets and the entire New Testament. I answer: True; but nothing new has been added; the same things that are found in the books of Moses are found in the others. For the other books do no more than show how in the course of history the word of Moses was kept or not kept. It is indeed stated in different words and the histories are different, but throughout there is one and the same teaching. And here we can challenge them to point out anywhere in all the books added to the books of Moses a single wordt hat is not found earlier in the books of Moses. For it is beyond question that all the Scriptures point to Christ alone. Now Christ says in John 5:46, "Moses wrote of me." Therefore everything that is in the other books is also in the books of Moses, and these are the original documents.
Isaiah 29:13, which the Lord quotes in Matthew 15:8: "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching the doctrines and commandments of men."
Mark the word of Christ, Who calls it vain worship to serve God after the doctrines of men. For Christ is not drunken or a fool; on His word we must build in all things rather than on all angels and creatures.
Paul, in Galatians 1, 8f., says: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."
In these words you hear a judgment of God against the Pope and all doctrines of men, which says that they are under the ban. And this ban is not like the Pope's ban; it is eternal and separates a man from God, from Christ, from all salvation and from everything that is good, and makes him the companion of devils. O what a terrible judgment is this! Look now, whether the Pope, priests and monks do not proclaim another and a different doctrine than that taught by Christ and His Apostles. We said above that Christ teaches, "What goeth into the mouth doth not defile a man." Contrary to this and beyond it the Pope, priests and monks say, "Thou liest, Christ, in so saying; for the eating of meat defiles a Carthusian and condemns him; and the same is true of theotherorders." Is not this striking Christ on the mouth, calling Him a liar and blaspheming Him, and teaching other doctrines than He taught? Therefore it is a just judgment, that they in their great holiness are condemned like blasphemers of God with an eternal ban.
Paul, in Titus 1:14 says: "Teach them not to give heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn them from the truth."
This is a strong command, that we are not at all to regard the commandments of men. Is not this clear enough? And Paul gives his reason: they turn men from the truth, he says. For as has been said above, the heart cannot trust in Christ and at the same time in the doctrines or the works of men. Therefore, as soon as a man turns to the doctrines of men he turns away from the truth, and does not regard it. On the other hand, he who finds his comfort in Christ cannot regard the commandments and the works of men. Look now, whose ban you should fear most! The Pope and his followers cast you far beyond Hell if you do not heed their commandments, and Christ commands you not to heed them on pain of His ban. Consider whom you wish to obey.
II 'Peter 2:1-3: "There shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of, and through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of YOU."
So then, the orders and monastic houses are damnable heresies. Why? Because they deny Christ, and blaspheme the way of faith. How? Christ says, there is no sin and no righteousness in eating, drinking, clothes, places and works of men; this they condemn, and teach and live the opposite, namely, that sin and righteousness are in these things. Hence Christ must be a liar, He must be denied and blasphemed together with His teaching and faith. And they make use of feigned words, and make much of their obedience, chastity and worship; but only through covetousness, that they may make merchandise of us, until they have brought all the wealth of the world into their possession, on the ground that they are the people who by their worship would help every man to Heaven. For this reason they are and remain damnable and blasphemous heresies.
Christ says, in Matthew 24:23: "Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before, Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not."
Tell me, how can a monk be saved? He binds his salvation to a place and says, "Here I find Christ; if I did not remain here, I should be lost." But Christ says, "No, I am not here." Who will reconcile these two? Therefore, it is clear from the word of Christ that all doctrines which bind the conscience to places are contrary to Christ. And if He does not allow it to be bound to meats, clothes, postures or anything that is external. There is no doubt then that this passage speaks of the Pope and his clergy, and that Christ Himself releases and sets free all priests and monks, in that he condemns all orders and monasteries and says, "Believe not, go not out," etc.
He says the same thing also in Luke 27:20: "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation, and men shall not say, Lo here! or, Lo there! For, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."
Is not this also clear enough? The doctrines of men can command nothing but external things; and since the kingdom of God is not external, both teachers and disciples must needs miss the kingdom and go astray. Nor will it help them to say that the holy fathers instituted the orders. For Christ has already destroyed this argument, since He says, that the very elect might be misled, that is, they will err, but not remain in their error. How else would it be an exceeding great error, if the elect were not misled? Let the teaching and the practice of the saints be what it will, the words of Christ are certain and clear. Him we must follow, and not the saints, whose teaching and works are uncertain. What He says stands firm, "The kingdom of God is among you, and not at a distance, either here or there."
NONE DARES CALL IT BIGOTRY (continued from page 2)
has maintained a religious despotism wherever it has been in power, even to the extent of putting to death those who disagree with it. The facts are so clear that they cannot be denied. And yet the recent propaganda campaign was conducted so skilfully and persistently that the Roman Church actually came to be looked upon by many as the victim of bigotry and intolerance. When the facts are presented the Roman Church itself stands forth as the biggest bigot of all time. In proof of that statement we submit the following:
To claim to be the only true church.
To teach that all outside the Roman Church are lost.
For the Pope to claim infallibility, or that he is the very mouthpiece of God on earth.
For the Pope to claim for himself the title 'Holy Father' - a claim which is simply blasphemous.
For the Roman Church in its official pronouncements, such as those of the Council of Trent, to pronounce anathemas upon all who dare to differ with it.
For the Roman Church to persecute or kill those who dare to differ with it, as it has done on so many occasions in the past.
For the Roman Church to refer to Protestants as 'heretics'.
For the Roman Church to teach its people that it is a mortal sin to attend a Protestant church.
For the Roman Church to restrict and persecute Protestants in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and various Latin American countries while it is accorded full freedom of religion in Protestant countries.
For the Roman Church to teach its people that it is a mortal sin to read any Bible other than their own annotated one.
For the Roman Church to force its pre-marital agreement upon Protestants who wish to marry Roman Catholics.
For the Roman Church to teach that the marriage of a Roman Catholic and a Protestant before a Protestant minister or an official of the State is null and void, that such is only 'attempted marriage', that the parties thereafter are living in sin, and that their children are illegitimate.
For the Roman Church to teach its people to 'detest' other churches and groups, as in the pledge which converts to Romanism take as a part of the induction ceremony, which reads: "With a sincere heart, therefore, and with unfeigned faith, I detest and abjure every error, heresy and sect opposed to the said Holy Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church."
For the Roman Church to maintain the Index of Forbidden Books.
For the Roman Church in Latin America to tell its people that Protestantism and Communism are the same thing.
Many other such practices could be cited.
ROMANISM AND COMMUNISM
There is a striking parallel between the practice of the Russian Communists who, knowing themselves to be the promoters of a system which resorts to violence, untruth, treachery, and every immoral practice as it serves their purpose, attempt to cover up their shortcomings by representing themselves and their allies as the "peace loving nations" and as the champions of the world's downtrodden masses, while accusing us of being "imperialists", "war-mongers", and "militarists" who are attempting to "enslave" the less developed nations, and the practice of the Roman Catholics who, knowing that for the most part their distinctive doctrines and rituals are not found in the Bible or are even contrary to the Bible, persistently designate themselves as "the only true church", and hurl the epithet "heretic" at all who differ from them. The Communists claim to "liberate" people when they take possession of a country, but what they actually do is to enslave them. They talk of "the People's Democratic Republic" (e.g., of Red China and East Germany), and of the "People's Courts" (as in Russia and China), while in fact the people of those countries have no voice at all in their government or in their courts. In similar manner the Roman Catholics, where they are in control, consider it their privilege and duty to "Christianise" or "convert" all others and to conform them to their church practices, by persuasion if possible, by force if necessary. The Communists hold that men will be free only when they are governed by the Communist state, and Roman Catholics hold that men are really Christian and can be saved only when they submit to the Roman Catholic Church and acknowledge the authority of the Pope. Such terminology involves an absolute reversal of the meaning of words. Both groups, as smoke-screens to cover up their own misdeeds and errors, accuse their opponents of the very things of which they know themselves to be guilty.
ROME'S PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE?
When Protestantism is stronger than Romanism, and when democracy is stronger than communism, the latter groups talk of tolerance and freedom. They want us to co-exist peacefully until they become stronger than we are - then they will really put the screws on. Peaceful co-existence means peaceful co-existence as long as we are stronger; but when they become stronger it means peaceful submission.
A further parallel between these two groups is that the Communists often are able to do their most effective work through "pinkos" and fellow travellers, and Roman Catholics often are most effective when they can persuade gullible Protestants under the pretence of being broad-minded and liberal to parrot their charges for them. But the facts of history are clear, and the doctrinal tenets and practices of both of those groups are a matter of public record. Any informed person knows that the tenets used by both of those groups in the present controversies are falsely used, that the accusations are baseless, and that the facts are exactly the reverse of what they allege. In the light of history as manifested in the nations of Europe, the Communist charge of "war-mongers" as brought against the democratic nations, and the Roman Catholic charge of "bigotry" as brought against Protestants, are so ridiculous that no one should be deceived by them.
Let Protestants protest orally and in writing whenever these fraudulent charges of "bigotry", "hate-mongering", and "hate literature" are made over the radio, television, in public discussion, or in print, and their falsity and injustice will soon be exposed.
How easily the worldly spirit seeps into Christian thought. There was a time when God's people relied entirely upon His Word to seek answers to their questions, but not so readily these days.
Today, other methods are employed to enquire of the Lord. Little wonder we receive such meagre portions of heavenly refreshment from Him.
The Prags are an example of this! Who are they, you ask? They form a large army within the Christian Church who have, we trust unwittingly, adopted a philosophy favoured by Modern Man - PRAGMATISM. Politicians, particularly, enjoy courting voters on the premise that they are 'pragmatic'. They rejoice in the title. Must we Christians, albeit unconsciously, echo their sentiments?
Pragmatism is a philosophical term. It teaches that the only real test of the truth in a philosophical principle is in its practical result. Or, more clearly, if the end result is satisfactory, the manner in which that result was arrived at must be a good one. The end, justifying the means. Whatever appears to work, 'Can't be bad!', is the crude colloquialism often heard.
Our country is run on pragmatic lines. Big Business, too. So, one fears, is much of church life. There was a time when Biblical principles governed the attitude; when Christians submitted themselves, totally, to Scriptural teaching. Their worship, personal behaviour, methods of evangelism: all, rested themselves in Revealed Truth.
Nowadays, the Prags say, 'Will it work?' They are very impressed by that which appears to. The old timers would follow the Word, and leave the rest to God. After all, that is His way. Is. 55:11; Mark 4:26-29.
You can recognise a Prag. He's impressed by large congregations, even if they are fed with candy-floss sermons lasting twenty minutes. 'Look at the results!' Whenever our Lord saw 'great multitudes', He laid down the standards He was demanding from true disciples. Luke 14:2535.
The Prag trembles with excitement at the approach of the Famous Evangelist, staying at his five-star hotel, Billy Graham for example. He may be up to his neck in compromise, but he gets RESULTS! After three years of preaching, and laying down heavenly issues, our Lord had only 120 left in His congregation. Acts 1:15. The Prag would not be satisfied with that! To him, it would be a lack of 'blessing', and a failure on the part of the Preacher.
The Prag must see things happening. If the Holy Spirit is not giving him a revival, he will make his own! Bring in the Rock groups and have a 'gospel' Rock Concert. That should do the trick! Bring in Cliff Richard, claiming to be a Christian yet living like a worldling. He has the answer!
At my mentioning Graham and Richard, the Prags' hands are lifted high in horror. Of course they are. These two spear-head the army of Prags among 'evangelicals'.
What happened to the Scriptures? The Prag no longer really trusts God's Word. In his heart, he no longer trusts God. He looks to Man. 1 Peter 1:24, 25.
Are you a Prag?
NO EASING OF ROME'S CHAINS ON MIXED MARRIAGES
A sermon preached by Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley
I feel it is my bounden duty this evening to bring to you a message upon the recent publication of Rome's new directory on Mixed Marriages. I have called my subject "No easing of Rome's Chains on Mixed Marriages - What really lies behind Maynooth's Smoke-screen."
The most important decision that any individual is called upon to make is the decision for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible says, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." The Bible says, "How long halt ye between two opinions?" The Bible says, "Now is the accepted time. Behold, now is the day of salvation!" Every individual challenged with the message of the Gospel has a decision to make - a decision that Pilate was forced to make, "What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?" You will make some answer to that question this evening. You will either re-affirm your faith and loyalty to the Son of God, or you will turn your back upon the Cross and upon the Christ that hung upon that Cross, and you will go out again into the darkness of a Christ-rejector's life, and you could go out of this meeting into the darkness of a Christ-rejector's death, and a Christ-rejector's eternity.
The second most important decision that we have to make in life is the choice of a life partner. That decision affects our wellbeing, affects our journey through this life, and will have an effect also upon our Eternity.
Now the Bible makes it clear and sets forth a distinct view - the Christian view of marriage. Perhaps I could sum up that view under three headings. One, marriage is a holy and sacred union between one man and one woman, designed to continue as long as they both do live. Secondly, children are the gift of God, and, thirdly, the family and not the individual is the unit of society. That is a very important point, it is not the individual that is the unit of society, but in God's order it is the family that is the unit of society. That is why today the Devil attacks the family, and marriage, because in destroying the family the Devil is destroying society, and by destroying society is destroying the whole family. We need to keep those three important principles in mind when we take a view of marriage.
Rome does something that has no Scriptural warrant whatsoever, and no Divine authority. Rome declares that marriage is a sacrament. Perhaps I should define what a sacrament is, and the most Scriptural definition that you could get of a sacrament is contained in the Shorter Catechism, "What is a Sacrament?" A Sacrament is a holy ordinance instituted by Christ, wherein by sensible signs Christ and the benefits of the new covenant are represented, sealed and applied to believers." So the Biblical foundation for a Sacrament is (1) it is instituted by Christ, and (2) it has sensible signs which illustrate outwardly what is done inwardly only by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In any reading of the New Testament the casual reader will soon discover that there are two such Sacraments. There is the Sacrament of Baptism and the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. The symbol in Baptism is water. The symbol in the Lord's Supper is bread and wine. There is nothing special about Baptismal water, it is only water and remains water, it is an outward sign of something spiritual. The bread of the Communion Feast is only bread and will always remain so. The wine is only wine, but they are outward visible signs of something that is inward and spiritual.
Now when we turn to the teaching of Rome, Rome tells us there are not two Sacraments but there are seven Sacraments, to wit: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Orders and Matrimony. These are the seven Sacraments of Rome. Five of them are not sacraments at all. They have no Scriptural authority, nor do they have those sensible signs, nor are they instituted by Christ. Christ did not institute marriage, marriage was instituted by God before man's fall, and there is no outward sign accompanying marriage. So as far as Rome is concerned she has taken marriage and she has made it a Sacrament. Why has she done that? Because she claims that she alone can administer the Sacraments, and, therefore, by making marriage a Sacrament that makes her the sole controller and the sole lawgiver and lawmaker and law-administrator as far as marriage is concerned. Having made marriage a Sacrament and claiming to be the only true Church on earth Rome says she alone can validate marriage, and if she does not give her seal of approval, then it-is not marriage at all.
If I could digress just for a moment, Rome says she is opposed to divorce, but then Rome has a system of annulments, and if you can't be divorced, if you pay plenty and if you are well up in the Roman Church, you can get as many divorces as you like, for Rome just declares that you were never married anyway. Most convenient! Even when Mr. Kennedy in America said go goodbye to his wife the hierarchy in the States issued a statement saying how they entered into great sympathy with him. Why? Because he was a Kennedy and because the coffers of the Church needed the Kennedy dollars, and so it can all be arranged, Rome can arrange these things. Rome puts herself above God's law, above civil law. She gods over God Almighty by setting out Rules and Canons for marriage that are unknown in the Scriptures, and have no authority whatsoever.
Now, of course, before the Reformation Rome had absolute control, and marriage became part of her Bank from which she could draw large sums of money. The other part of that Bank was 'Purgatory'. Two very useful Banks! So Rome could say, "I allow you to marry so-and-so if you pay so much to the Church. I will get your soul out of Purgatory if you pay so much to the Church." So the Reformers called them Purgatory pickpockets, and talked about Rome's Marriage Shops. How true the Reformers were!
Then there came the great Reformation, and it may interest you to know that it took until the Twentieth Century for Rome to admit that the marriage of Protestants was valid. It wasn't until the 19th April, 1908, that the Pope at last consented that the marriage of Protestants were valid marriages. I will tell you what he didn't do, he didn't back-date it, so all the Protestants before 1908 (are you now glad you didn't marry 'till after 1908?) were not married at all, according to Rome, and their children were all illegitimate. In 1908, because of the tremendous pressure politically on the Vatican, the Vatican decided in the Netemary Decree to recognise the legitimacy of marriage between Protestants by Protestant ministers. But the Pope still claimed that although Protestants were legally married he could annul their marriage at anytime. So he was able to say, "I have the power to annul your marriage at any time."
Now, of course, in Roman Catholic countries the Church of Rome today still exercises tremendous power in the field of marriages. The Evangelical Confederation of Columbia issued a statement headed "Protestant Marriage not Legal." As the Roman Catholic and the Civil Ceremonies are the only forms of marriage which produce legal effects in Columbia, Protestants are first married by a Magistrate, and then solemnised their union with a religious service in their own church. The Roman Catholic clergy is jealous of its privileged position in the performance of the marriage ceremony. It brands as public concubinage the union produced by civil marriage, it puts pressure on the civil authorities to delay and obstruct the civil ceremony, if not to prevent it altogether. Against those couples who have the courage and tenacity to carry through with the civil ceremony, the church hurls its penalty of excommunication in an attempt to force the pair through a sort of social "sending them to Coventry" and economic pressure to renounce their sin and to return to the Catholic Church in repentance."
Now in a Protestant-dominated society we may not see the effects of the power of the Church of Rome in the marriage sphere, but in a country completely dominated by the Roman Catholic Church we do see those effects. The older members here will remember the McCann case in Belfast, and will remember the Rev. William Corkey's stand at that time.
Those that are not old enough to remember that case will remember a case down in the South of Ireland where a Protestant woman was going to be forced to put her family into a Roman Catholic school, and she had to flee the country to save her children from priestcraft and Roman Catholic domination.
Now, of course, the second thing that Rome wields over her pretensions on marriage is that 'if you are married to a Protestant we can supply you with an easy divorce, because we don't really recognise your marriage, so we can give you the blessing of annulment, and that can be procured at a price,' and, in fact, it is interesting to note that the Church of Rome has also arranged a special way whereby the partner in a mixed marriage who was not married in the Roman Catholic Church can have their marriage validated without the knowledge of the Protestant partner.
Lucian Vinnet, a converted Roman Catholic priest, in one of his books, I was a Priest, tells us that the Roman Catholic partner of the marriage who is worried about their standing can be married validly without the consent or knowledge of the Protestant party. There is a wonderful Roman invention which is called "Cure from the very root." The Pope in Rome will give his consent to this marriage in union with that of the Roman Catholic party, using also the original marriage consent of the Protestant party, and this will render valid the marriage of this unfortunate couple. So in the absence of the Protestant party the Roman Catholic party can have a valid marriage, and the Protestant partner can know nothing whatsoever about the ceremony.
Now, of course, Rome's stand on marriage has been greatly opposed by those who believe in civil and religious liberty. Let me say from this pulpit tonight, that no church has the right to say, "We will enact the law of marriage." The marriage is clearly set out in the Scriptures, it has become now a civil contract, entered in by those who obey the laws of their country.
Now after a long time the hierarchy of Ireland has met, it has deliberated, and we know that the Church of Ireland clergy, and the Presbyterian clergy, and the Methodist clergy have had their ecumenical talks, and they were all telling us that the 'face of the Church was going to be changed', and they were all waiting for this new Marriage Directory. It was to be a great ecumenical breakthrough, and it was going to prepare the way for unity. Unity in the dark! Well, we have had the breakthrough, we have got the new Directory, and what do we discover? We discover that the Church of Rome hasn't changed one iota. What she has done, she has removed some of the obnoxious things from the window, and she has put them under the counter, and she has put a new sign in the window, but when you go inside to purchase the commodity you find it is the same old commodity, and the new formula is the old rules in a new guise. The Harlot has had a facelift! More cosmetics have been used upon her face. Her lips may look sweeter. Her eyelashes may be more beautifully painted. Her hands may have covered up the steel paw and put on a velvet glove over it, but the Church is still the same, semper-eadem - always the same.
What does this Directory say? First of all it holds forth this: that the basic thrust of the Directory is, "The Church of Rome alone has been endowed with the fulness of the means of salvation. We are the Church!" Unimsanctum, the Bull of the Papacy published way back in 1302, is the same doctrine that is being taught - "We are obliged by the faith to believe and hold, and we do firmly believe and sincerely confess that there is one Holy Catholic and apostolic Church, and that outside this Church there is neither salvation nor remission of sins. Furthermore, we declare, state, define and pronounce that it is altogether necessary to salvation for every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff." That is the thrust of the New Directory, that Rome stands supreme. Let me tell you, friend, salvation is in no Church. Salvation is in no Sacrament. Salvation is in no Creed. Salvation is in Christ and in Christ alone. It is not Christ plus Baptism, and it is not Christ plus the Sacraments. It is Christ alone. If you havenít got Christ you can have as many churches as you like, they can be Reformed or Roman, they may be Orthodox or Heterodox; they can be fundamental or false, but no church can save. We need to get back to the fundamentals of the Reformation on that great teaching of justification by faith alone. "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under Heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12).
Then the Directory, and although they have had these wonderful relationships with their ecumenical 'separated brethren', although they have been taken by the hand by the Moderator of the General Assembly, and they have been embraced by the President of the Methodist Church, and they have been courted by the Bishops of the Church of Ireland, although they have had all these ecumenical encounters, what do they say? They say, "In a high proportion of the mixed marriages in Ireland, the Protestant partner is only nominally a Protestant, he is virtually without denominational allegiance, and has no objection that the child of the marriage should be brought up in the Roman Catholic faith."
I wonder what Prods they are talking about? I would like to ask that question, that "the Protestants have no faith." That is a slander on the Protestant people of this Province and of this whole island, because Protestant people have convictions. Protestant people have a rock-solid foundation which is the Word of God, and Protestant people know that in that Book there is Life, and without that Book there is no life. So the hierarchy disparages the Protestants. In fact, it came out in the wash in Sunday Sequence today. I think Trevor Williams will soon be made a Count of the Holy Roman See, and get the Pope's medal, for he is one of the greatest propagandists that the Church of Rome has in this land. My, if anybody comes on criticising Rome, how he gets them off that programme as quickly as he can. He can't stick anybody that comes down hard against the Roman Catholic Church!
Disparagement of Protestantism, yes!
